Re: Goodbye, Sophie

Thanks, everyone, for the wonderful sentiments and tales (tails?) of similar losses. They really do help to ease the loss.

Well, we are not going to rush out and buy a successor tomorrow, but it is inevitable in the not-too-distant future. Done wallowing.

So sorry, Rich. I've lost many as well, and we have three rescued living with us now ... two cats, and our beautiful Husky, Carlos.

Somewhere out there is a pup who will gladden your heart again.

Rich:

Sorry for your loss!

We had to put Misty down; one week short of 14 years. Thought she was the most wonderful dog, in the world. She survived Hemolytic Anemia, (usually fatal) for three years. Her knee joints started wearing out and she hobbled on three legs. She could still move pretty fast, when she wanted to.

I never wanted a small house dog but, this little Shih Tzu, won me over in a hurry!

May, get a replacement. Haven't decided yet. Hate to go thru the anguish again, at some point in time.

"The Rainbow Bridge." Tears me up, everytime I hear it mentioned.

Yes, it's a difficult decision.

My philosophy on this is that the pain of losing them mirrors the joy they gave you for many years in life. I never look to get a "replacement," just a successor. They each carve out their own unique place in your heart.

We have never rushed out to replace a dog. Gotta go through the time it takes to get over them, rather than distract yourself from the pain by getting a replacement right away. Never has no pain-no gain rung so true.

Best wishes in your canine future from one dog-lover to another. We're gonna do it again, just not right away.

Re: Goodbye, Sophie

I'm so sorry.

I didn't think I would really be bothered by the loss of one of our cats, especially after our daughter was born, until one got out of the house and ran away (poker night with the boys, garage door open for the cigar smoke - DW was ready to skewer me). We thought he was gone for good and we were so crushed! Fortunately our next door neighbor's black lab found him and kept him cornered until we could pick him up. He seemed to know not to hurt the cat and while our cat was acutely interested in his intentions, seemed to know it wasn't in immediate danger. Since then "Bomber" has been our favorite dog!

Re: Goodbye, Sophie

Having had the wondeful opportunity to meet Sophie in person, I am deeply saddened by your loss, Rich. She was bright and beautiful, and so charming and devoted.

Have you considered looking at the rescue organization for Dobies? I work with our Border Collie rescue, and it might be a rewarding way to find Sophie's successor and honor her impact on your lives and on everyone who met her.

Sarah

spot on, rich. i've finally come to understand that myself. it's easy for me to think i've lost too much. but when i think of all the loss i've endured in a clearer light, i realize how lucky i've been in life that i had so much to lose.

Rich:

"Replacement," was a bad choice of words, on my part. You said it best!

I could never, replace "Misty!" She, will always hold a special place, in our hearts.

Pet lovers,--should have a special place in heaven.

Best of luck, in your search, for a successor!

One great way to memorialize your beloved lost pet is to gift to your local Humane Society, or look into one of the other ideas here (link to Humane Society memorial page):
