Apparently there's a huge power outage in San Diego:

Power Out Into the Night | NBC San Diego

I heard that it extends to other parts of southern California, as well as parts of Arizona and Mexico.

Hope all of our members in the affected areas are OK until the power outage is over.

And . . . the ones who are not members? -- certainly a majority -- we hope they are also OK. Maybe not without inconvenience, but OK nonetheless.

Edit to add: I [-]know[/-] suspect this is probably what you meant.

Power was out about 5 hours in La Quinta Ca - came back on around 8:30. Not bad except for the poor devils who are there in the 110 degree heat.

Glad to hear that it came back on, calmloki, and glad you weren't stuck in an elevator or some such thing. It must have been awfully hot for everyone out there.

Nah - we're stuck up here in much milder Oregon for the summer. Whew!

My power came back on around 2am, so we were out for about 10 hours. The traffic was a mess because of signals being out - my 20 minute commute was 2.5 hours, but at least I was in a cool car, listening to the radio, and powering my iphone.
It was in the low 90s when it went out, but it cooled off decently when the sun went down.
Elevators and the electric trolley were the sucky places to get stuck, otherwise it wasn't too big of a deal.

FLASH REPORT from DS who is student at San Diego State University:
We were gathering to watch the football game and eat dinner at a Mexican restaurant near campus. The power went out and the owner of the restaurant was very upset. The emergency warning horns went off and police cars came on campus with a helicopter overhead.

We decided to just drink beer at the restaurant. It was very hot and everyone started migrating to a pool on campus. Then someone got up and asked for quiet. They announced that a party was starting on the top level of the parking garage with music supplied by a stereo system in a car. Everyone migrated to the parking garage. The sheriffs department helicopter passed overhead and shined it's light down on us. Very exciting!

There was nothing much in our refrigerator this morning as I'd neglected to buy food -- so no food spoilage. I drank my roommate's supply of milk in the morning. Power is on now, so we are going to go out and get something to eat.
It's tough when you are a poor college student.

Glad to hear that it wasn't too bad of an experience. :)

There was a funny news story on it this morning - can't remember which station - comparing the guy who did the "Doh!" and blew out California interspersed with clips of Homer Simpson.

I assume he's going to be sending out resumes soon....

No system should be so fragile that one mistake can cause such an event. There is a whole gaggle of geese that should be shot.
