It's Friday the 13th...are you feeling unlucky?

Nah, I don't feel unlucky. I'm gonna slip off after lunch and play a little golf. :) Now if I shoot a horrible score................. :-\

I feel very lucky today! I quit my job and today is my last day! hahahaha!!!! :D

It's the last day, of the last October, before I retire - OK:confused:

I'm on vacation in another 2 hours, and not returning to work till November 1, and retiring May 1, 2007...

So, for me, it's "a good day".....

...how did Friday 13th become so unlucky anyway?

It's a combination of things, but Friday the 13th is a culmination of those things.

Friday is considered unlucky because many disasters in the past have happened on a Friday.

The number 13 is considered unlucky because if a woman had one of her 13 periods in a year during any one of the 13 full moons in a year, she would be considered a witch and possibly be killed.

I'm having a good day so far too, off from work, spent the morning with dh bringing home his son from the hospital after what could have been a fatal accident. We're all feeling very fortunate today.

North Korea, Iran, Planes flying into NYC buildings, Blizzard in Buffalo, NY Yankees losing in first round etc. What else could happen today?

BTW, how did Friday 13th become so unlucky anyway?

Well, the Yankees lost earlier this week (GO METS!!!), and the plane crashed a few days ago, so those have nothing to do with Friday the 13th. But, I get your point.

I saw pictures of Buffalo - pretty wild! But that's about the only thing on your list that solely happened today.

And just because I'm bored at work: Some historians propose that the origin of the "Black Friday" was the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of Knights Templars on October 13, 1307 (Friday), to be later tortured into admitting heresy. This can't be confirmed as the source of the Friday the 13th superstition, though, because that is not talked about until the 19th century. But, 13 was also associated with death in ancient Egypt, and it is considered taboo for Hindus to do things in groups of 13.

As for Friday: The name "Friday" was derived from a Norse deity worshipped on the sixth day, known either as Frigg (goddess of marriage and fertility), or Freya (goddess of sex and fertility), or both, the two figures having become intertwined in the handing-down of myths over time (the etymology of "Friday" has been given both ways). Christians later recast her as a witch and Friday was considered to be the pagan's sabbath. Also, Friday was execution day in ancient Rome.

Ok, enough trivia for one day... ;)

Astro - I found another cube at a much smaller organization. I'm not starting until the end of this month, so I'm taking a little time off. Sort of like temporary psuedo-ER :D

Oh man. We talk about this danger, that danger, the need to stay thin and healthy, etc, but driving is a big risk. I'm glad to here your DH's son is OK.

Judging by your new avatar, you're ready to bite some serious butt attack your new job vigorously ;) Meanwhile, enjoy your break.

Superstition?
.... not always.

Yesterday afternoon I had a pain in a problem tooth.
By last night at 2AM, it was bad enough to wake me up.
By this morning, it was extremely painful; by mid morning, it was absolutely excruciating.

An emergency call to my dentist and an X-ray showed the abscess... and, due to other factors (it was a problem tooth), I had no alternative but to go to an oral surgeon and, with much pain, at 12 noon had it extracted.

Dentists have a numbering system for teeth so they can refer to them consistently.
It was tooth #13.

Tooth..... er, I mean... Truth!
