Here in Minnesota, we let murderers off on probation. 0 to 20 years probation for one I know. He was acquitted of stabbing a girl who died nine days after the stabbing. He plead guilty to second degree attempted murder for a guy that he cut his throat and stabbed in the back in the same incident.
The judge gave him probation... There was no self defense. It was just a drug deal gone bad.
