Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

<sigh> I wish I could partake in fine wines like I used to. Wine makes my heart race and pound away 2 hours later. Even with one glass :( It's funny the older I get, the less my body could tolerate. Anyone else with a sensitive wine heart?

Oops, I don't want to highjack CT's thread :)

That pounding heart thing - That's a good thing - right? 8)

Try a bottle of L'Authentique from Trader Joe's. I'd be interested in your opinion.

I'll try it. What kind of grape is it made from? - What Country?

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Thanks for the tip! We are always looking for good cheap wine. This weekend was brutally hot ( ~85) so we drank sangria to get through.

Have you had the Barefoot wine they carry? One a bunch of gold medals and is quite tasty, especially a couple of their whites-Chardonnay and a...Reisling? Also very cheap, I think $5.

For what its worth, you having a few drinks might have done the same thing for the guys in the vicinity... ;)

L'Authentique - Red Table Wine - France - No Vintage. -$3.99

(although you'll find no clue on the label, it's a Bordeaux)

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Anyone got a good/simple recipe for Sangria?

Include the brand, name, etc. of the wine you use, of course.

Obviously, I'm too lazy to Google some recipes and play "trial and error".

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Sangrias about as free form of a drink recipe as you can find.

Bottle of wine, any wine. I like zinfandel.
Equal amount of orange juice and/or cranberry juice and/or club soda

Any fresh or canned fruit, I like mandarin orange or grapefruit

Some folks add sugar, cinnamon sticks, herbal tea bags, etc.

GREAT way to get rid of that wine that just didnt taste quite right on its own.

My favorite, which is a non wine version, is a bottle of vodka, a large bottle of meyers rum, a bottle of crangrape and a can of hawaiian punch, add a bunch of canned or jarred fruit chunks like pineapple and oranges.

Big hit at parties.

Be very, very sorry the next day. :(

We use to make it in lined trash cans in college, any old wine would do!

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

I am an alcohol wimp. I like Mike's Hard Lemonade, but it costs too much. Any guesses on how to make a reasonable facsimile?

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Country Time and vodka? Hey, if you are careful and mix it 1 part vodka for 8 parts lemonade I bet you wouldn't taste the vodka!

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Oprah had a lemon martini on her show recently. Sounded great. What does Mike's taste like....or does it taste like Country Time and vodka.

Yeah, buy it at costco or sams club.

Hum. Nearest Costco, 160 miles away. A small Sams Club in driving distance, but could never seem to justify the costs of a membership.

Re: Some Trader Joe 'Wine Finds' - For the Cheap inclined..............

Well now you can.

I forget what I paid for Mikes the last time I bought it at Sams, which was a while ago, but I think a buck a bottle or so was in the vicinity.

You might go the same route as C-T did...find lots of pretty good higher end foodstuffs and whatnot at very reasonable prices. Just being able to buy good cheese for half the price a grocery store charges might pay back that $35 or $40 a year (or whatever the dang fee is). Besides, you can have a second card...usually targeted for the spouse but I signed my dad up for my secondary card so we can both shop there on one membership...maybe someone else in your circle of friends wants to split a membership with you?
