Should I quit my job?

Hi, I'm 36, married, no kids, I've been at my job at Megacorp for 5 years, no debt except the mortgage and my husband and I have 6 months+ emergency fund and we could live off his income if need be. Don't have enough for FI yet though.

I want to quit my job and want your opinion. I'm really over my job as a project coordinator and want to quit. I am a good performer and got good feedback at my last performance review but I'm over the work at this company, I'm not learning and lately they've been watching the clock etc eg. If you're late from lunch etc and I was told today that I've been taking a lot of time off and not making work my priority. The time off was 1 week sick leave in Jan and Dr appointments about 1 a week since last week and for next 4 weeks as I've been sick a lot lately, feeling exhausted etc and I'm going to different specialists, having tests to find out what's wrong, also last week my mother had an accident and I took 2.5days off to visit her at hospital, take her home etc.

Basically I was told that I should make work my priority not my health or mother.

I'm planning on finding another job, I'm confident I could find something in the next 2 months, worse case scenario I could get some temp office work.

What do you think, should I hand my 4 weeks notice now or wait till I find a new job? Work + illness is really stressing me out, last weekend I ended up at the emergency room with bad chest pains, I though I was having a heart attack.

Rarely if ever is it a good idea to quit a job and then look for another. Look for another job, land it, and then give notice. Job search may take longer than you think. And, it's MUCH easier at interview to talk about your current job as opposed to explaining why you are currently unemployed.

Welcome to ER .

Same advise , better to have the new job before giving 2 weeks notice.

Does your Mega Corp have a police regarding family medical leave ?

Temping is usually crap, but sometimes can become a route to perm. employment.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You may qualify under FMLA, it's intended for family time like caregivers. It gives you 12-13 weeks or so, intermittent days off can extend it futher. Some employers will extend that further. You need a DR. to sign off on the paperwork, they need to have knowledge(visits) or medical records for documentation.

Don't quit to you look into options that your entitled to.

If you have 6 months saving, no kids, and can live off your husband's income, then I think you should quit. Sounds like your workplace has become extremely dysfunctional environment, and, at least in my experience, once that starts it just gets worse. Not worth ruining your health to try and hang on. Really, you won't regret leaving.

I recommend you request FMLA leave (http://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/ , some state have more generous requirements), let your manager throw a hissy-fit but it won't matter because you will be leaving in any case. While on leave start your job search. As others have said try to land a new job before you quit this one.


FMLA leave will continue your fringe benefits and won't show as a break in service on your resume.

Thank you all for your quick feedback, I'm weighting my health vs explaining time off to perspective employers. My contract says I have to give 4 weeks notice. I'm in Australia so fmla doesn't apply. They can't stop me from going to the Dr appts and I have approval to go to them already, it's more the stress and them complaining about unexpectedly taking time off for my mothers accident.

It make a big difference living in Australia....

How are the job prospects there I know when I was in the UK there were people who worked full time as 'temps'... it was pretty easy for them to get a job... if they were pushed too far, they would just leave and go to an different firm... a number were from NZ, Australia, South Africa and even India... some would take off 2 months and go home... come back and work some more... so, if the prospects are good.... then just tell mgmt your thoughts and see how they respond... that will give you all the info you need to make a decision....

If it was me, I would quit, focus on cutting costs and work on staying on a budget while getting my health issues fixed, and begin looking after that. Small gaps in employment (a few months) isn't necessarily a bad thing.

It is supposedly easier to get a new job if you are still employed (never understood that one), but you can explain a few months away easily by siting family health issues that needed to be taken care of.

I'd give myself a time period (say a month or two) to find a new job and quit. Depending on what happened in that time period, I'd rethink my options (hopefully from a megacorp-desk far away).

Thank you all. Thanks daylatedollarshort, I really enjoyed the law cartoon. Thanks FrankiesGirl and Fred123, I'm definitely leaning towards leaving, will discuss with hubby tonight and sleep on it although I think he will want me to stay.

Give your 2 weeks. Temp if you want to; there are some well payed positions (sans benefits) that you can land that will watch the clock to get you the heck out of the office before you hit 40 hours!

Yea, the one good thing that has happened with me temping is that I am not asked to work late.... heck, sometimes they ask me to work less hours which I am fine with...

My initial reaction was like the others, wait and get another job and then submit your resignation.

However, a couple other possibilities might exist. One would be to take a short leave of absence to decompress and deal with your and your family's health issues without the stress of work hanging over you.

The other, if leaving before getting another job is acceptable to you, would be to talk with your employer and tell them that work is stressing you out so their choice is to either accept your resignation or to make some changes to your workload that are mutually agreeable to address the sources of the stress. If you are a good performer they might be willing to make some accommodations to keep you and if they are unwilling to then you can just submit your 4 weeks notice.

You are having stress, some health issues and worried about/helping an ill relative. Now you are getting attitude and blow back from your work. Do you think it is realistic to add finding a new job into the mix? Job hunting under those conditions would be very stressful.I'd say either ignore the crap from work and do what you need to do to start feeling better or just quit the job.

Your health problems could well be related to job issues,and quitting might help you de-stress...it kind of sounds as if you have already checking out of the office mentally and people are starting to notice.
