I am ignoring all of the shilling for jewelry, the ads are getting ridiculous. The restaurants can go fly this year also. Dear husband and I are going to have dinner at home this year with yours truly cooking a multi course meal complete with matching wine. Got the idea from last months Martha Stewart magazine. I'll make a nice romantic setting for the both of us and settle in for an evening with my favorite guy. Doesn't get any better than that.

We usually avoid going out on Valentine's Day because it's impossible to get in and then you are rushed . I 'll probably make Cioppino with crusty bread . My So usually brings me flowers and a mushy card .

We don't go out or buy gifts for V day, either. We always stay home and cook a nice surf and turf dinner. That's our tradition. This year the turf is duck, but we're not sure yet on the surf. Probably sea scallops or shrimp or whatever looks good/fresh on the 13th or 14th when we go to the grocery store.

Driving her to the airport for 2 weeks with her 93 YO Mom down south.

SC raised, Grass-fed ribeye steaks on the grill! We don't do the gifts/eating out thing either. I've never cooked duck, Gatorbuzz, but it sounds awesome!

Valentines Day? Valentine's Day? (crazy maniacal laughter)

On Valentine's Day I'll be sitting in my cubicle at work from 6 AM to 3:30 PM. Frank will be at work from 2:30 PM to midnight. Guess that about blows the day. :dead:

Probably we'll exchange a few nice, friendly e-mails, suitable to be received at or sent from work.
:smitten::-*

Valentine's Day has already been celebrated in Quebec - wonderful dinners out, sea salt scrub and hour long massage in the spa at our hotel - not to mention all the fun at Carnival and skiing at Mt. St. Anne! I will be frantically completing an online course this week, so it works out well. Boy, did he get lucky this year! (maybe we can hit "our" restaurant the first weekend of Mar - after I get back from VA)

My dw plans on getting me drunk and take advantage of me.

Oh and a nice dinner with some wine :D

I think we'll drive up to the Grand Canyon on Valentine's Day and spend the weekend enjoying one of the nation's most spectacular sites, plus quiet time to ourselves. Maybe not romantic but closer in tune to who my wife and I are than the traditional modes of celebrating the "holiday."

I think I may treat myself to a larger monitor, and enjoy the evening with a brandy and YouPorn.com.

At least I won't be in trouble because the candy is too sweet, the flowers wrong, the lingerie trashy, and my personality insufficiently "romantic".

I am not what you would call a romantic guy at all. I hate Valentine's day especially and all that touchy feely thing. But, my wife likes it, so I always make an effort. Usually we stay home tough, I cook a very nice dinner with candle lights, wine and our best china. We usually buy a practical gift that we both want for the occasion. This year we'd like a Nintendo Wii, but we can't find it anywhere. I know, I know not super romantic, but hey that's what we both want. Last year, after my wife "suggested" that for once we try to do something super romantic on Valentine's day, I went all out and it totally backfired. She had an "emotional moment" (or as I call it an "hormonal moment", but don't go repeat it) and it was totally spoiled. So this year we're going back to our normal routine.

We aren't doing gifts but we will be going to a very nice local restaurant. They don't have any VDay special pricing (aka gouging) or anything like that, and it's a good reason to go out and support a local place that we really like but is generally too pricey for us to justify going to all the time. It's also within a couple miles of home and we have reservations, so it shouldn't be too stressful. We are really looking forward to it actually :)

Sometimes we do the make our own meal at home too... a lot of my friends are doing this and I think it's a great idea. We are really lucky to have a good group of friends that rarely get caught up in the hype and hysteria of things... thus making it much easier for us to not get too caught up in the hype and hysteria of things.

Valentine's Day is our anniversary. I got the idea for a gift from a recent thread: pre-paid matching cell phones; SO has added a clown face which if you knew us is a very romantic gesture. The phones are already fired up and we will use them to meet up at the coffee shop. Hope they don't run out of cupcakes.

Which is why I go all out on her birthday and our anniversary only..........Valentine's Day can be hell..............:D

The best Valentines gift I got was a trashy watch probably from Target that had a red band and the numbers were red hearts and it said I love you . I wore it to work and I was the envy of every woman and it probably only set him back $12.99.My worst valentines gift was from this guy I was crazy about . He gave me a red tool box .The relationship ended soon after .

Wow! My sisters have said that I am "sensitivity challenged" but even I know better than that!

I understand completely. Valentine's day is an artificially created day by the Hallmark greeting card company to spur sales in an otherwise slow time of year. A pure marketing gimmick to manipulate consumers. And they fell for it.

Nonetheless, I get her a card (NOT from Hallmark!) in the interest of marital harmony, and either flowers or a dinner out, sometimes both.

Has your husband recovered from your New Year's [-]schemes[/-] plans yet? Just wondering if that was covered by his health insurance...

Spouse and I have been trading the same Valentine's Day card since college. (She probably thinks I've forgotten that it's my turn.) It's also my turn to cook dinner that night, so I'll go with her favorite.

One of the best things about V-Day for parents is being able to make smushy talk in front of your (hugely grossed-out and gagging) teenager.

Years ago in another relationship I came up with what I thought was my best V-Day gift ever-- a very romantic toolbox in forget-me-not red for her to store her makeup & jewelry in. I never heard from that woman again...

You should give it a try sometime. It's great and pretty easy to make. You will be shocked at how much fat is in the bottom of the roasting pan after it's done. The layer of skin that they have is very thick, which makes even the white parts tender and juicy. And foie gras (sp?), or otherwise knows as duck liver, is great and easy to make. Luckily my wife doesn't like it, so I get the whole liver. :)

Anyway, enjoy your Vday.

Dear husband was up (no pun intended) for the challenge. He knows the kind of woman he married. We had a wonderful time New Years, the kilt was a big hit. Quite a few guys gave him credit for having the guts to wear it. Fire works (both sets) were great.

For those in the Baltimore are who want a really great idea for a romantic dinner for two try Aldo's. They have this package where you are served in the wine cellar. It is a table for two, beautifully set. Your own butler is in attendance where you are served a six course meal ( to die for) with wines matched to each course. Not cheap but worth it. DH and I did this over Christmas and we are looking for a place that does this in our town. This is kind of the motivation for my putting on this Valentine dinner for him. Got all of the shopping done today including the wine and champagne. Now I have to figure out what to wear for the occasion.

Some pretty good plans here. As for me, I'll be sitting around the house alone.

Oh well, maybe I can send a message or two.

My DW just received a letter for Jury Duty selection on the 14th. Hmmmm, I wonder how that day's gonna go. The 14th may be on hold for a day or so, but I've got to think of something for that day or the next as it may be.

I'll admit that we have never so much as exchanged a card for Valentine's Day and I doubt if that is going to change in this lifetime. It all feels so much like marketing hype that we just can't get into it.

My last beau took me out on VD for a very expensive graduated dinner at a fondue place (fondue appetizer, fondue entree, fondue dessert); but made the reservations late and got stuck with a 9 pm dinner, which I was a little too tired and hungry to really savor.
Better if he had grilled a steak and made a salad at home, given me a box of candy and saved $100. I would have enjoyed it more. Regardless, I profusely thanked him so I wouldn't hurt his feelings.
