I recall when he first hit the scene, but I didn't realize he was from Milwaukee.

As opposed to his 'smooth sound', his interpretation of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" (written by his sax player, Paul Desmond) is what grabbed me -

I caught Mr. Jarreau once in concert, and all I can say is that he was one cool cat.

He had the mind of a top notch jazz musician, and his voice was an instrument.

George Duke played a big part in Al's career, and he too left us prematurely. He had to be an instrumental genius to keep up with Al Jarreau's mind.

I got familiar with him on Napster. What a loss! And so young. He had another 5-8 years.

He was definitely a staple of my college radio DJing years in the late 70s and early 80s. I still have many of his tunes on my mp3 player and listen to them during workouts. RIP.
