I'm only with Vanguard. From this family how about just getting a total bond fund? Simple enough.
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VBTLX) - $10,000 minimum
or
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Investor Shares (VBMFX) - $3000 minimum
p.s. Admiral has lower expense ratio of the two.

I've been in the TR Price Spectrum Income fund for 10 years. Pays a consistent ~4% for the past 20 years.
Recently upped the ante to the TRP High Yield...~7.7% consistently for over 20 years...so good that they 've closed the fund last month.
YMMV but I've been very happy with both funds (tonight is dividend night!)
Note that these funds are not as safe as T bills etc, hence the higher yields, but my personal belief for myself is that the risk is low. Caveat emptor!

My bond allocation is 74% VFIDX Vanguard Intermediate Corporate, 10% VFIJX Vanguard GNMA fund and 16% VWEAX Vanguard High Yield. In aggregate, these funds have a weighted average duration of 4.8 and a weighted average yield of 3.75%.
I may transition to some shorter duration if it appears interest rate increases are imminent.

However, interest rates are terribly low now and current yields are as a result. When interest rates rise, bond fund NAVs will take a predictable hit. The longer the bond duration, the bigger the NAV hit, so many advisors suggest shortening duration. As a result, Jack Bogle and I are also holding https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0539&FundIntExt=INT.
Jack (Bogle) and I are 50/50 in these two bond funds, so you'd be in good company.
