i always get "shot" down the minute i mentioned the word "finance" at work or to my friends.

"oh, you're money hungry, oh you're shallow, oh you work too hard, oh money is the root of all evils, oh you're obsess, oh you're nuts,... bla bla bla..." is the general respone that i got. so i learned to keep my mouth shut around here, yet there are thousands and thousands of people in this forum and on others finance forum thinks, talks, reads, study, discuss about finance on a daily basis and more important, appreciate the value of planning for your future.

is "finance" something that you don't talk about "face to face"? is it an evil and forbidden subject? i can chat with my buddies for hours about Tiger woods, celebrity, baseball, football, kids soccer game but NO finance period. everything that we do, every decision that we make including going to the movies, eat out dinner, car we drive, the house we live in is all base on finance. why don't anyone want to talk about it??

thank god for forum like this one and i personally would like to meet some of you fine folks in the local state for a sandwich and chat... what do u say??

Maybe you need a new set of friends!

The Vanguard Diehards are currently planning their fifth get-together. They also have a number of local gatherings in major cities, although around here that'd be two or three people hanging out in the lineup...

Yeah it's funny - here in the U.S. the topic of income, wealth, finances, etc. is like a social taboo ... you just don't talk about it. But we'll talk about any other personal topic: religion, race, health/illness, sex, marital problems, etc. ...

I noticed in Europe that people speak more openly about income and financial matters. My own theory for this is that here in the States, we have the legacy of the puritan work ethic, and tend to believe that everyone has an opportunity to work hard and gain material success. Thus we (knowingly or not) tend to judge people's worth ethic and success in life by their material wealth.

In Europe, I sense a much more "it is what it is" attitude about one's financial situation, almost like "hey, this is what someone with my type of job makes, and it's out of my control and doesn't matter how hard I work" view. But they refrain from talking about some of the other stuff we go on about here ...

Anyway, I went off on a bit of a tangent there ...

In-person get togethers would be fun but quite an undertaking to arrange. That's what's great about this forum - everyone can drop in when they have a few free moments. But if you guys ever have a happy hour in New York let me know ...

:)

Great. We'll show up to a room full of dogs, 15 year old girls and 5'2" internet tough guys, who collectively have a net worth of about two dollars.

Hey! Have you been spying on me? ;)

also one more note,

Finance is like pornagraphy. it's much more easier to talk about on the internet with the people that don't know, especially when noone is looking...

hey cute, r u talking about me "the 5'2" internet tough guy who collectively worth about 2 bucks"?..

I think this "Oh, you're just obsessed with money!" thing is a defense mechanism.

People look at their savings, see that they have none, and rationalize it with "Oh, there are things that are more important than money."

So, if you talk about saving and planning, you are attacking their rationalization, so they have to shoot you down as soon as possible.
