Class of 2013

I'm not sure yet if this will be more of a long sabbatical for him where he finds something else interesting to do in a year or so, or whether he'll be converting fully to being an employee of Sarah, Inc. for the duration. ;).

From what I've heard, a tough employer but good benefits. ;)

Yep, but at least he will get to drink some beer on the job! And hey, y'all should come back sometime! :)

DH has been keeping his quitting kinda quiet, but today a salesgirl from his company came to my office for a sales call with the company we sublet space from. The office manager over there said, " oh so you know Sarah and her DH? Well did you know they are driving a school bus from London to Mongolia this summer?" Fml. So that cat is out of the bag a wee bit early! He'd planned on a month notice but looks like it'll be six weeks instead! Not exactly what we'd planned but who knew the local nosey Parker would feel the need!

Wow, nice job!!! I hope your retirement is even more successful than your working life has been. You have my sincere congratulations!

Adding diehard1997 and gauss to the list.

Resigned from my MegaCorp of 22 years on Apr 12, 2013 (following a 15 month leave of absence.)

Joining the class of 2013!

June 13 is my last day! I am 52 and originally planned to ER at 50 ,but got a touch of OMY syndrome. A company buyout pushed me to ER..I am thrilled!

Congratulations, Just Walk Away! I think you are going to love it!

Great way to exit, I had waited some time and never got the buyout. Enjoy.

Looks like OMY may get me! My son can't get all the classes he needs to graduate from college as early as we were planning. I will have to remain a resident of this state into 2014 to keep in-state tuition. If a voluntary layoff package comes along, I'll be gone in less than a month, if not I have scheduled 9 weeks of vacation this summer and may squeeze in a couple more. In any case, it doesn't look like I will move permanently to Colorado until 2014.

Looks like 2013 will happen after all! Went on my first vacation. Came back and worked a couple of weeks of day shift then went to an overnight shift. That was the most painful experience I've had in a long time. I think I'm just getting too old to do that anymore. Time to hang 'em up. On top of that, the townhouse I am living in was sold and I have to move the end of June anyway. I'll spend time in Colorado this summer and then come back to Virginia for the winter. I'll wait 'til I put the papers in to add my name to the list, but its feeling good right now!

DH has (4) working days left after working over 32 years for the same MegaCorp. He had planned to retire at age 55 (the magic age for pension, retiree medical, and to access 401k without penalty), but heard rumors of possible voluntary layoffs, so he hung in there several extra months in the hopes of getting a hefty severance package. The VLOs never materialized. He will receive pay for 400 hrs. of vacation that was banked over time and reached over a decade ago.

I will make an update on the list when it's official.

Still not sure if my current situation is retirement or a "sabbatical". I don't think I'm quite ready for full retirement yet (mostly because I'm not comfortable yet with needing to tap savings and investments for living expenses, and because I can't get over the feeling of guilt about doing "nothing" while DW still works). FIRECalc may say so, but I'm not easy about it (I guess it's a modified form of OMYS; not sure).

I have an interview on Thursday about an opening at a tiny post office about 25 miles from home. It's 20 hours a week (5x4). The main reason I applied is because there's a decent chance that it could lead to a transfer to another 20 hour post office three blocks from our home, and I hear the local PO turns over a lot because most folks either retire for good or leave when they find something full time.

I figure it's worth talking about, if nothing else. At about $12 an hour, it would only be about a $12K annual income at 20 hours a week, but that's enough to plug the income shortfall in our budget and we wouldn't be likely to need to dig into savings for living expenses yet. And it would still give me enough time to pursue my own interests and do the "preacher's wife" stuff to help us succeed here.

Even if offered, I'm not sure I'd accept. I need to get more details and think about it.... a lot. But it's been almost two months and I'm not sure I'm ready to "do nothing" just yet, especially while DW is still working.

To the graduating and graduated Class of 2013, I tip my hat to you. I hope you 'hit'em straight, catch more than you can carry, enjoy the lake, take it the bright lights and smell the roses.

MartyB, you started a great thread and I am rooting for your next major post. :).

That sounds like a pretty good deal that would bridge the financial gap but wouldn't be too onerous in terms of hours worked. I've been semi-retired for about 3 years and while not perfect has worked out well.

My Oct 13 ER date is now under threat, with my pre-ER two months long service leave likely not to be approved in the interest of the morale of other under resourced areas where I work.

Ironically, it is my inability to take long service leave in general that has had me considering ER in the first place. I've even had an amusing conversation with HR where the conversation basically went:

Me: So, can I take a years long service leave at half pay while I ponder my future?
HR: Hardly. If you take such leave, our HR policy is such that we can't back fill your position while you are gone, so your boss, who approves this leave, would have to agree to the loss of your position for a year. In other words, fat chance.
Me: If I quit, get paid out my long service leave, find myself over the next 12 months, decide that megacorp is really the life for me and ask to get back in, would you take me?
HR: In your job category, absolutely. Your skill set will always be in high demand with us and we hold no grudges.
Me: Huh. Can't we just cut out the middle man and you just give me the year off without me having to quit?
HR: As much sense as that would make, no.

Good thing I have a sense of humour!

I sent the retirement papers in today! Last day is June 14. Two weeks vacation and officially retired June 28. I have to be out of my townhouse June 30. After that I will be "homeless" and "j#bless" :D

Today was the last real day of w**k for me! I'm on vacation for the month of June. Just have to go back in to say my final goodbyes and turn in my security badge at the end of the month! Feels good but I'm sitting here wondering what the hell do I do now :)

I have more than 5 acres of heavy woods that burned in a forest fire several years ago. You want to come over and help cut, split, and stack enough fire wood to last a lifetime?

That sounds like a pretty good deal that would bridge the financial gap but wouldn't be too onerous in terms of hours worked. I've been semi-retired for about 3 years and while not perfect has worked out well.

Update: We've talked about various options and getting started with this, and I have a verbal agreement (should know more in a week or two) to be a "relief" employee who will have regularly scheduled hours on Saturday mornings, with a few other days here and there to fill in for vacations and such. It would start with two weeks of training before I am turned loose on the public.

It's a little something to force me out of the house once in a while, anyway, and perhaps meet a few folks in the process. And you never know what some of them could have in the offing. Still determined I will never work a full-time corporate career gig again. I may not be fully retired, but I *am* drawing a rather solid line there.

Sounds great !!! Its a nice solution to the "wee bit early" ER and a good way to mitigate a little risk while giving you something to do a couple of days a week.

The plug has been pulled. The house, our cars, our furniture and most of our belongings were sold. Left for the airport and flew to our new home in Cozumel, MX. Been here since the 25th and have been busy reconnecting with old friends and converting our rental condo into a full time home condo. Friends took us out to dinner the other night for my 55th birthday. Great food, great company and an awesome sunset. Life is good.
