Class of 2013

WOW! It is Halloween and my last day is 60 days from now.........but nobody knows yet. It is hard to keep it quiet and stay motivated........I am so excited to be able to retire at 60!

Well, ya see...thing is.....it's kind of complicated. :nonono: There are 2 issues. I had "firmly" decided that my retirement date would be 12/31/13. Then, just in the last few days, I made a decision (sort of). The contractor where I work shuts down between Christmas & New Year's Day. When that happens every year, my co-workers & I have to decide to either use Annual Leave (vacation for feds) or come to work & basically just putter around the office, maybe catch up on old paperwork or on-line training, etc. We can't be required to use vacation time if we don't want to.

My plan was & is to use as little Annual Leave as possible & sell it back when I retire. Thus...not using any leave during the holiday. I'll use that time to pack my stuff & haul it home or the dumpster. That's where one of my issues comes into play. I don't really want to just disappear while everybody's off for the holidays. My 2 co-workers won't be there & all the 250 or so contractor employees I've worked with all this time will be gone as well.

So.....I've decided that my official retirement date will actually be.......1/02/14. Yep, the guy who started the Class of 2013 list will be retiring in 2014! I'm sorry, I know I blew it! :hide: I want to be there to say my goodbyes on January 2nd properly. I've made friends there & I want to be able to walk around & say goodbye, plus....my co-workers are gonna have to spring for some serious eats that day!

I'm as surprised as anybody to have come to this decision, but I think it's the way I wanna do it. I dropped my paperwork at the post office today, so it's a done deal now. I guess I'll have to officially disembark the Class of 2013 group now & join the 2014 group. This really just kind of snuck up on me....lol! Best wishes to all the remaining Class of 2013 who have yet to pull the trigger! ;)

Oh yeah, I did say there were TWO issues. :)

The other one is that my management is trying to convince me to work one more year! lol No pay increase being offered, just a better location. I've been driving 125 miles each way every week for 5 years, and now they're offering me a nearly identical position in the town that I've been commuting to/from for all that time. If they'd offered a year ago I'd have been interested.

Oops, I replied to DCharles and just realized I'm in the wrong thread. My date is 010314, Like Marty I've saved most of my annual leave (355 hrs) and will get paid for it. According to FedSmith articles, that's the best date for those retiring under the old Civil Service Retirement System. So, in addition to being 64 days behind DCharles, I'm one day behind Marty. I am getting more excited by the day!
