So I find myself in an enviable situation. I recently hit my FI number. I had planned to continue w*rking part-time because it was lower stress, great money. However, recent politics and unscrupulousl financial practices have tipped the B.S. meter to full. I'm planning to resign in the next few weeks.

I'm relatively young at 43. I feel the world is my oyster suddenly. I have been contemplating other "careers" just for the fun of it. The money is completely irrelevant.

So my question to you all is: taking money out of the equation, what would be your dream job?

Congratulations on being FI.

I'd become a travel and outdoor writer except I would write anything. I've written fishing articles in the past. It's pretty demanding and pays dog-crap. I did find the "research" enjoyable.

My other choice would be a novelist but I'm pretty sure I'd write drivel. I might make a financial success out of it but it would still be drivel. Why bother if I wouldn't like my output and don't need the money.

Some years ago I was watching a "making of the SI swimsuit issue" program. In one of the segments, they were doing a photo shoot on a beach somewhere. One of the staff flunkies was using a big blush brush to dust the sand off of the models' tushes.

I would get a food truck and whenever I felt like it I'd make up a bunch of my specialty bbq (Ribs, tri-tip, pulled pork, chicken) and sides then email friends and ex-co-workers (cuz most are good folks/friends still) where I'll be setting up.


That way I could share good (some say my 'q is great) food, and make my beer money for the month!

Big data quant for a political campaign or non-profit. I like working with numbers and analyzing data. I have the courses and certificates mapped out. If we decide to wind down the businesses I will likely try do something along those lines instead, contract work part of the year or part-time.

Southern California houses a location used for parking the Goodyear blimp. Every time I drive by and see it there I can't help but think piloting that would be one of the great jobs in the world.

I am quite lucky in this respect....I retired from my dream job about 5 years ago as a fireman and now work part time in the Rock and roll/ movie/ TV business. There is nothing better than loving what you work at.

I've had friends tell my I'm good at 'digging up dirt' from public websites. For example, a friend was looking at a home purchase in 2009ish in Del Mar. It was cheaper than you'd expect so he asked me to dig into it. I found that it was slated for trustee sale (in foreclosure, but not bank owned yet), the owners were 3 people - a married couple and the wife's twin. Then it got interesting - the twin sisters had some name recognition in San Diego. One was the former mayor and heiress to the Jack In the Box fortune.

My friend was not even allowed to put in an offer on the house. Listing agent wouldn't respond to his agent, or him via any method. - it later transferred to friends of the former mayor. It was fun digging up all the scoop on this wacky transaction.

Later it came out that the former mayor was broke - she'd gambled away millions at the Indian casinos.

I've done similar digging for friends looking to vet real estate purchases, contractors they're considering hiring, etc... It's fun and it's amazing how much is available through online databases of liens, property records, court cases, etc.

I never figured out how to monetize this "skill" into a job.

Seaplane pilot in South America. I forget the name of the airline but it's a regional one and the pilots work barefoot and wear shorts and t shirts. The requirements were pretty high, on the order of 5,000 hours seaplane time, airline transport rating, etc. But it sure looked like a fun job.

I met a guy once who was in charge of brand quality for a major cruise line. His job involved traveling as a passenger ensuring the ships maintained the quality standards expected by corporate. I want his job!

There are dream jobs depending on your skill set and interest. I had my dream job with NASA, I retired 57.5, could have gone at 55. I would have happily staid on but had health issues (a night in the cardiac ward can change ones perspective). So now I travel when I can, look after my portfolio, MIL's portfolio and that of a fraternal organization. And DW & I are involved in several charities. Keeps me as active as I want to be. Work can be great but it is not better than being retired.

Trans Maldivian Airways (in the Indian Ocean). That would be my dream job too.

One of my husband's Italian cousins has that job (works for Marco Polo - which is kind of like the Italian Nat' Geo.) Ironically - he wants to move to the US and become a cowboy.

Dream jobs are still j*b$ after a while.
