180 Trillion Leisure Hours Lost To Work Last Year | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

I suspect (know) this is a point of view very close to our forum's collective heart.

QUOTE:
"The majority of American adults find work cutting into the middle of their days—exactly when leisure is most effective," said Adam Bernhardt, the Boston University sociology professor who headed the study. "The hours between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. are ideally suited to browsing stores, dozing in front of the television, and finishing the morning paper. Daytime hours are also the warmest and sunniest of the day, making them perfect for outdoor activities. Unfortunately, most Americans can't enjoy leisure during this time, for the simple reason that they're 'at work.'"

...

"Week after week of potential relaxation time is squandered to jobs, with millions of would-be leisurers prohibited from sleeping in, working on hobbies, or taking trips," said Kletter, executive director of the Five-To-Nine Foundation. "An average employed person's ability to stroll aimlessly around his town and 'do whatever' is basically nonexistent 49 weeks out of the year."

Interesting, and very likely true.

I'm doing my very best to single-handedly reverse this trend.. :D

Hey, some of us used to squander that time sleepin'. What with night and evening shifts, really screwed up the ability to stay awake and pursue genuine leisure.

Not anymore. I get to sleep at night, and chase after worldly pleasures during optimum hours.

I've always felt this way even in grade school. All this class and homework stuff is getting in the way of fun

It is of course from the Onion, which ranks with the "unnamed high government official" as a source of great humor unbounded by reality

Notwithstanding that the article comes from The Onion, isn't everybody here taking off for 2 hours at lunch anyways to do some leisure stuff?

I love it! I'm going to send it to my friend who just RE'd. She's busy trying to figure out "whaddaya do all day?"

Umm, yes, I think we all know that the Onion is a satire site.

Nevertheless this article is an attitude near to the hearts of many who got out and yearn to get out of the corporate rat race.

This is for all those posters who wonder why some woman continue to work even after their husband retires .:)

It's quite simple, in my case.

There is no question that my DW wishes to be with others (and get paid) rather than spend the day with me (and not get paid) :ROFLMAO: ...

I like his ideas.

Unfortunately it took retirement to allow me to achieve the nirvana of doing anything useful for no more than an hour on any day. Some days even less.

Au contraire! The Onion is probably the most real news site in existence...
