New retirement plan - keep working!

OH Brother. Another dopey article that gets threadded and spins in nine different directions....

On balance were talking about here is:

1. REs that must "take jobs they hate" to make ends meet.. Thats pretty bad and certainly not truly retired. This is what you boys and girls have to plan to NOT happen.

2. Other RE's that "consult" or stay on the industry teat that they almost left. IMO that is retired and smart enough not to throw easy money away.

3. Then the purely "to keep busy" types fashioning crap in the garage to sell at craft fairs or being a fishing guide... these people are having fun first and making a buck in the process.

4. Sit home and don't do a goddam thing.

I'm a 2 on my way toward 3. Also DW has strict instructions to shoot first if I start displaying #4 symptoms.

Which are you?

HI BUM. MY answer is "None of the above". All of my days are filled and then some, but I am doing things that don't produce any real income ("fishing guide"
.............. man I would love that). I never had a period when I just sat around all day and did nothing (not that it would necessraily be a bad thing). Making
"stuff" just for the recreation is not for me. I read yesterday about some
high profile guy who liked to go out into his garage
and produce handmade wooden pens?? Far be it from me to cast ridicule on someone's hobbies, but I don't get it. I would rather watch paint dry. Truly!

No. 4 - eleven years of practice to develop it into a fine art form. Doing nothing is much tougher than it looks. You have to guard against travel, remodeling/hurricane repair, watching the markets and putzing with stocks, volunteer work, etc., etc.

Difficult - but somebody has to do it. I don't think that Walden Pond dude realized how hard it can be to successfully pull off - doing nothing in particular.

Got a 1992 Geo Storm from a woman friend of ours who went legally blind for the $65 cost of towing. A search of the net indicates that certain Izusu 12 valv DOHC blown engines are a direct drop in - bolt up to the tranny - new metalflake paint job, custom rims/moon spinner hubs, a little bodywork on dings - keeping a grip and doing nothing is hard.

Yesterday - a neighbor gave us a cooked/smoked hindquarter of wild pig from his last hunting trip - while we were on the back deck pointed out how to use the remaining pilings( after hurricane George) to rebuild my 120' pier, put up night lights and start catching fish like the piers(called runs down here) to the left and right of me.

Doing nothing takes discipline - and don't let anybody fool you - it ain't easy.

Hi yourself JG,

Yep, I realize a bunch, maybe most Rs and ERs arent engaged in any income producing activity. My opinion is that those that do produce passive income should not be catagorized as not retired. They're doing their thing and getting paid as well.

Almost as good as being ER'ed with a working spouse!

Gosh unclemick2 doing nothing sounds like hard work. I'll ponder this over my next cup if can get DW to gimmie a heater. Dont want to have to drag my keester off the LazyBoy.

Isn't that the truth?
Between Golf and fly-fishing, I spend, on average about 7 hours away from home, pretty much daily, and still have time to interfere with my wife's mental health.
For the posters on this board that are retired, while spouse continues to work, another adventure is in store when spouse decides he, or she, has had enough.
(That's when the rubber really meets the road :))

Thanks for the warning, Jarhead. Hubby has less than 2 months to go. Funny how ALL his co-workers keep asking me "What are you going to do with a retired husband?". I was really ready for this but now I'm started to wonder about this retirement stuff.

He has mentioned that maybe next Jan. he'll look for something part-time. As long as it's minimal and he can be off for Sept and Oct (our favorite travel months) this could work.

Rubber meets the road, huh?
