Well,it's official, I've turned in the paperwork. This will be the first New Year's Day in decades, that I won't be paid. That's not going to be a big deal from now on I think.

A few days ago, my boss approached me about my 4/1/2014 retirement date. He asked that I stay on at 2 days a week. I said no. He said - How about 1 day a week. I said no. I said - How about a monthly retainer and I don't do any work, just provide assistance through phone and email. He didn't answer. I have my replacement ready to go,(been training him for 1.5 years), but I don't think the boss is comfortable with the fact that my replacement doesn't have the client relationships that I have. And neither of them want me to tell my clients that I'm retiring. The boss hinted that they could stop paying my monthly stock buy back payments if I quit in April. The next few months will be interesting.

Sign me up - just told my boss! Now I'm negotiating with HR between January 3rd vs. 15th. I have the biggest grin that anyone's ever seen me with. Plan to make the announcement when/if they present me with a birthday cake later on today!

30 days from today, I'm going January 3rd too and had the same quandary as you for a hot minute. Jan 3 is the middle of the pay period, but payroll can just figure it out!
Good luck & congrats

Congrats! Stick to your guns. Hopefully, you have more leverage than your employer; shame it almost always seems to come to that. Let us know how it works out for you.

Well, I vested in my pension and 401k goodies to the tune of $45k today. This was the last major piece that needed to fall into place ofr us, so I am all set now. This is finally starting to feel real.

I'm not going to make my Jan 3rd retirement date. I've decided to accept an offer to continue to work a little longer (date to be determined at the drop of a hat) in exchange for a transfer to a recently vacated position to the town where my wife & kids are, thus eliminating my weekly commute 130 miles away for work. For the last ~ 5 years, I've maintained a separate apartment just for work, while my wife & family lived in another state. I visited on weekends. I still plan to retire soon, but this change will allow me to reach some specific financial goals that I was planning to take care of post-retirement. Now I can do that without using $$ that are specifically designated for retirement. I will remain in the Class of 2014, because I don't intend to work any longer than that.

Mine's official. My completed retirement package was submitted last week by my HR retirement counselor at my Fed Agency to the National Finance Center. They will forward my package and payroll information to the Office of Personnel Management the week after I am retired. Then I wait for OPM to process, could be 2-9 months. :-( They will give me interim payments which is always less than you eventually receive. Glad I have been saving cash this past year and I will get a lump sum check for 390 hours of annual leave which will also help.

Jan 11, 2014, 49 years old. For those of you who question the age, Special Retirement, FERS, LE/FF/ATF, 25 years service at any age. And yes, I will get COLA's and the Special Supplement until I am 62.

No plans to work as of now. But you never say never. If the right offer comes along, who knows. :-)

No plans to work as of now. But you never say never. If the right offer comes along, who knows. :-)

Congrats, Kaufman Rider! I had already submitted my pkg to HR at the end of October, but now I'm pulling it back. I was scheduled to retire on 2 Jan, with close to 400 hrs of Annual Leave, and 36 yrs, 10 months under regular CSRS. Last minute relocation deal with my management is causing me to kick the can down the road a few more months (never thought I'd be saying that). When I say "months" that's just what I mean, though.

Thanks martyb. CSRS, I wish I had that. Started a few years too late. Bought my military time back so I have 32 years on the books.

I see you are in East Texas? We are close, the Kaufman in my handle is for Kaufman County. Rider, Harley what else
