Banishment

And i bet those are his good points!

I removed the post that posted the PM regarding JG. If anyone wants to ask me about it, send me a PM.

I didn't know anyone could be banished from this board. If they can, Dory, tell me what to do to get sent away, just so long as the penalty box is somewhere warm (winter's coming, just got cold) :)

Can any of you Mods tell us how many posters have been banished? Very few, it would appear.

I count roughly a dozen. However, only three of those were "regular" posters who were forced to walk the plank due to repeated unacceptable behavior and after having been warned to knock it off.

Most on the banished list are posters who spammed the board a few times and refused to cease and desist when requested to do so.

I think banishment should be used sparingly and only if capital punishment doenst work first ;)....Seriously, JG really isnt much different from a lot of posters here that just want to be entertained...seems a strange dichotomy that there is a group of folks that really get upset with him and another group that loves him for making that same group upset.... sure is a lot of folks full of **** ;)

JG was never banned! - His account was hijacked and he was welcomed to create a new one!

He was actually done a favor, and should be thankful that we stopped the other poster from impersonating him. JG, why don't you publicly thank the moderators for the action that we took on your behalf?

Here's the current ban list:
Hokus (spelled with a "c" instead of a "k"): Too many reasons to get into here.
Maximillion: Banned due to trolling complaints.
Mike-1: Banned due to a flood of trolling complaints.
Don't post here anymore: Mike-1 again.
Cassandra: Business insurance website spam.
Skippy: Spam.

Email:
donald92135@().com & donald92136@().com -- This was Henry512, I forget why he was banned.
Email: money_pay_cash@().com -- Get-rich-quick schemes

We've also banned a half-dozen IP addresses who kept re-registering under other poster names. I don't remember specifics (they know who they are!) and I'd have to do some digging to recover their names.

The reasons for banning are in the "reasonable poster" category (or the "Well, duh" category). Banning is usually preceeded by a bunch of PMs or e-mails from us moderators, at least two moderator edits of someone's posts, and a moderator discussion. Much of the decision comes from user feedback-- when we get a dozen post reports or PMs it's pretty easy to judge the concensus. However an occasional hit&run spammer is so blatant that we ban almost by reflex.

The banning software is pretty flexible. Posters can be banned on IP address (one address or a block of addresses), host name (like *.mil), email address, or username. Posters can be prevented from registering, prevented from posting, or both. The ban can be temporary (a cool-off day in the penalty box) or permanent. Moderators can craft a message to be displayed to the person who was banned, and we can also log additional notes for our reference (which apparently we don't always take the time to do).

The server that hosts E-R.org also has a list of "bad" IP addresses. These are known to the Internet watchdogs as spam, spoof/fraud, or felonious (e.g. child porn) sites. The list can be loaded as part of a server's default software or customized. If the feature is turned on and your IP address happens to be on the "bad" list, then after about 30 seconds IE usually gives you a "Page cannot be displayed" warning. The server currently has this list turned off but it occasionally gets turned back on when the software is patched or updated. I mention this issue because I've been locked out a couple times in the past year and it's happened to one other poster who we know of. So in case the server does it to you by mistake, make sure you have someone's e-mail address handy!

JG, welcome back.  When can we expect inflammatory content?

I am working up to it slowly. Afraid of "culture" shock;
especially with the "newbies" since I left. Got to get them acclimated a bit first.
