My PSA has been high, and had a few spikes, the last few years. Most recent biopsy came back positive, so I see MD on May 13 to decide radiation or surgery.
Immediate impact - we're cancelling our July Hawaii vacation. Other immediate impact is of course fear and depression....

Before starting a treatment, consider getting a second opinion. If you indeed do have cancer, this one is usually very slow in progressing. Many times, old age kills 'ya before the cancer does the deed. Please try to keep your spirits up and keep Hawaii on your vacation list for later.

Cancer sucks (been there, done that, got the t-shirt - but ovarian, not prostate). Make sure you go to a specialist, to a really good hospital and doctor, and get a second opinion on treatment. As has been mentioned above, prostate cancer often isn't something they treat because it grows slowly. Not always. The side effects of the surgery can be pretty upsetting. I had a friend who went through this.

I was diagnosed with PC in January at age 61, I am off to Alaska for two weeks in June. In your pathology report compare the volume(size) of your prostate to your PSA. If your Gleason score is 6 or less, most clinicians will tell you that you have plenty of time to make any decisions. My PC was only detected in 5% of one of 15 samples in the interior of a 23 mm core. I have lots of options one of which is active surveillance, I won't get a PSA until July and possibly another biopsy in 18 months. Start on a good healthy diet today. PM me if I can help at all.

Please be sure to look at ALL your options. Although they could be appropriate in your situation, the two you list aren't the only treatments available.

Thanks all. My PSA went from 5.4 March 2012 to 9.9 March 2013. 3 areas had cancer 2mm 3+3 Gleason, 3 mm 3+3, and 19 mm (yikes, I think) 3+4. Watch and wait is not an option, in my case.
I'm also "lucky" in that I am now a two-timer. I also have an indolent form of leukemia. Consequently, I go to Sloan Kettering in NYC for both cancers. So, I'm confident with my choice of doctor.

I'm sorry to hear of the diagnosis. A Gleason of 3+3 has excellent prognosis and the 3+4 is only very slightly worse.

The most excellent thing is that your caught it.

Going to Sloan for treatment is fantastic. My DH was diagnosed 4 years ago (PSA went from 1.2 to 2.4 in three months !) and is now great with PSA readings of 0.00.

Hang in there. I know what you're going through. Soon you will be in Hawaii !

What caused your DH to get another PSA test within 3 months of the first one. Was he feeling other symptoms? I am asking because the test is usually done yearly.

Lucky coincidence. He started a Statin and his doctor ordered bloodtests to check for liver functions; he threw the PSA test on there out of habit.
