Cats, doing almost anything except scratching the furniture. (That gets hand-claps, "bad cat!" and "No!")
Seeing family and friends after absence
Hearing something funny (especially unintentionally funny)
Thinking of something funny (especially if it would shock the people around me if they knew what I was thinking)
I am a smiler by nature, and when we joined the local gym a few months ago I naturally smiled at everyone, since they were all new faces to me. I have been sadly disappointed by the small percentage who smile back, and the large number who seem to be looking in almost any other direction, rather than acknowledge my presence. Am I so hideous?
Incidentally, the nicest, friendliest smiles and greetings seem to come from the lowest-level staff, such as the immigrant lady, with very little English, who cleans the bathrooms and makes the coffee. We get more conversation from her than the more senior staff, let alone our fellow members.
