Has anyone visited the Seychelles?

Well, what do you know? Got an email from a med school classmate who comes from the Seychelles. She is organizing our 30 year reunion there in 2010. It will be organized around a conference, so expenses would be tax deductible. Seems like too good an opportunity to miss!

There was a very old thread about the Seychelles, but it's closed. Does anyone have any experience of travelling there?

I've never been, but it was a common destination for well-off people in southern Africa, at least in the mid 80s. Sorry, not much help.

never been there, but saw an episode on it on Global Trekker, PBS(Ian was the traveller) and could never get that picture-perfect beach image out of head since then.

I have family from there. They all left and won't go back. Its not what it used to be. Run down, the natives rip off tourists and the best beaches which were once pristene now commonly have beer bottle liter. Lots and lots of poverty. The people who operated the country, had work ethic, etc. pretty much started leaving when the socialists took over. Had a talk with my uncle last week, who told me all this about his most recent visit earlier this summer. Told me you'd be amazed at what the natives say about tourists (in Creole because they know you won't understand) --- like openly talking about scamming people.
