Rolling Duffel Bag??

A quote, apparently falsely attributed to bank robber Willie Sutton, but still apropos vis-a-vis checked luggage, is "Because that's where the money is".

Bags are broken into in airports:

Your Checked Bags Aren't As Safe As You Think They Are

....and that's in the US alone AFAIK.

If, and it seems that they are, bags are broken into, which ones do you think are the targets? Yes, me too...."Because that's where the money is". Can't find stats on the average cost of the bags generally stolen from, but I'm willing to bet it ain't the grungy ones.......(as I'm fond of saying "Our bags are so beat up that people open them and put stuff in")

We're trying carry on backpacks only for our upcoming trip.

I read a book by Willie Sutton titled Where The Money Was, so I think that settles the attribution question.

Not that I necessarily believe Snopes, but here's their take:

Sutton co-authored two books during his lifetime: I, Willie Sutton (1953) and Where the Money Was (1976), the latter a play on the catchphrase he’d never uttered.

Which brings us to the meat of the matter. Sutton is famous for two things: His fascinating career as an illegal withdrawals specialist (bank robber, that is) and for a pithy rejoinder supposedly uttered in response to an interviewer’s query about why he robbed banks. While lore would have it that the bank robber replied “Because that’s where the money is” to that common question, Sutton denied ever having said it. “The credit belongs to some enterprising reporter who apparently felt a need to fill out his copy,” wrote Sutton in his autobiography. “I can’t even remember where I first read it. It just seemed to appear one day, and then it was everywhere.”

I have hopefully checked my last bag, and a rolling duffel is just too big for my needs. My wife and I have long ago followed Rick Steve's packing list, and we can travel indefinitely in a 21" carry on bag with swivel wheels.

I am a big fan of Rick Steves to the extent that I am that ugly American tourist carrying around a physical guidebook! Still, I haven't been able to get myself packed into just a carry on. I will say that my recent switch to staying in Airbnbs, with easy access to doing my laundry, does open up the possibility of downsizing my luggage.

I will check out Travelpro's offerings.
