Looks like the treasury upped the 6 month return on I bonds to 1.64% starting today. 0.1% fixed, 0.77% inflation rate. still gives me pause, but I might rethink the investment.

Sweet. My vintage 2000 I-bonds are back to 4.94%. As always, my regret is that I didn't have more than about $4,000 to put into 'em back then....
 
And yet...SS will not be getting a COLA because there is no inflation.

I-bond rates are reset every 6 months; COLAs for SS are based on a period of 12 trailing months.

Note that I-bonds had a negative inflation component in the previous 6 months, too.

That's the difference between measuring inflation at a 6 month interval versus 12 months.
