It has had a nice run-up but still has room to grow. I made a LOT of money on CSCO over the years but it's no longer going to grow at its previous rate... which is why FFIV is now my pick. To me, FFIV will be the new CSCO. Worth checking out.

Interesting first post! I am not a really long-time member of this forum, but I think we usually refrain from touting individual stocks much.

About FFIV, I happen to have it, bought a while back. And I am sure there may be others who also have it.

I spent my working life in IT. I wouldn't touch one of those stocks (including MSFT) with your 10 foot pole. But I might, just might, buy some of the company DS works for. They make switching equipment for cable TV companies (note that I didn't name them).

However, I think this first post could be eaten with eggs. I'd call it SPAM.

FFIV

I thought when I read "I just bought GUT" or "my personal stock picks for 2011" that it'd be okay to write what stocks I think would be good investments... my bad.

The FFIV post isn't spam. It's very odd that kerplunk (or whatever the last poster's handle is) wouldn't touch FFIV. VERY odd. Cloud computing is here to stay. When a company competes with the likes of CSCO and successfully begins to erode CSCO's market share, it's a company worth considering w/ regard to investing. Or are the millions who invested in FFIV wrong? The appreciation of that stock tells the story.

Hardly a spam post, don't you agree? Or are the spam posts to which you refer written in as personal a manner such as this?

Any newly-registered poster who touts a stock in their first post without so much as a 'hello' in the "hi, I am..." forum, is bound to be suspect. And when you add a "how dare you" comeback in post #2, it only helps confirm the initial suspicion.

OK, I just transferred my life savings to FFIV, based on your recommendation. What should I do next?

IMHO, let's give Topcat a break here... The general ways people join this group aren't always obvious.

Re the topic:

I am cautious about tech stocks because I've gotten burned so badly over the years on stocks that I would swear would go up... and suddenly fell. And I was working in IT at the time.

OTOH, idiot that I am, I bought GOOG at $180 and sold it at a modest profit... but oh I wish I had kept it!

Welcome Topcat. Might want to post a "Hi I am" so people know what's up with you. :greetings10:

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that this is not spam....

But, the company (in my few minutes of looking at it) does not seem to have anything that is unique that someone else can not duplicate easily... now, I could be wrong as I did not spend much time...

So, if this is true... a 70X earnings is a bit pricey... by maybe 3 to 5X what it should be...

Forward P/E estimated a bit lower at 38 because of its high growth. But of course I personally experienced what happened to companies that would grow and grow to the sky, like in 2000.

I happened to buy nearly 2 years ago. Time to get out, perhaps half? Got that thirsty RV to feed.

PS. Darn. This position happens to be in an after-tax account. One good thing I still have cap loss carried over from 2008 to cover this nice, nice, cap gain. Heh heh heh...

Ah, yes, the rules of engagement. I failed to read, "Properly introducing yourself with the standard 'Hello, I am ...' or something similar, is required of all new posters." Thanks for the warm welcome!

I give. Hello, I'm a brand-spanking new poster! I have an active interest in (trying to) retire early through investing in real estate and individual stocks. I am not 'one who spams' nor am I associated with any organization that engages in any process related to spamming. I'm a dim-witted Texan trying to improve upon my current & future financial situation.

Fair enough?

DH works for CSCO and I work for HPQ and other than participating in ESPP (and selling immediately upon receipt) neither of us will invest in tech stocks.

I just finished reading "Snowball" (Buffett's bio) for the second time. The book opens during the tech stock run-up in 1999. He tells why the stocks are dangerous for even savvy investors and why he won't invest. I agree with his assertions and will continue to stay away....indexing is just fine with me.

Sure. Fair enough. And a little understanding on your part of how this board is a spam target might have been helpful to you, too.

But where does this level of gratuitous comment come in, though--are you too busy/important to actually look at the post just before you made this comment to see what this long-time poster's name is (it's "kumquat" by the way)? Can you understand how comments like these are not going to encourage people to respond to your posts or even want to read them?

Yes, FFIV has had a really nice runup in the past year. It may be a great investment.

But on this board, anything with a P/E of 72 would be considered more than a bit risky. Would you mind posting some reasons why it isn't?

Well heck-fire Texican! If you are interested in real estate and dim-witted it would be my pleasure to sell you a fine 7 unit building (still) standing in Salem Oregon. Guar-an-teed to do something to your financial situation! Diversification doncha know - you could send 1/2 the water that falls on that place to down south and water your lawn for free! Or drown out the fire ants.

Ah, the Jonathan Lebed approach to investing...

Probably wasn't getting the proper deference & respect at Yahoo! Finance.

Uh oh, ya caught me! I'm Lebed's cousin! Gosh darn it! And I thought I could git away with it....

Lebed? Yeah, that was my intent. I figured that if all of the 20 people in this forum were to rush out and purchase FFIV it would certainly affect the volume enough for me to rake in massive profits.

I must be a lot younger than the crowd on this board. 20 years ago I considered PE ratios but today's market doesn't warrant that. Feel free to label me "loco," but when an industry-specific arm of the market shows promise and begins to rise - and is expected to rise given certain economic/global variables - it only takes a little common sense to know what's gonna make me some money. Case in point: fertilizer stocks. I suppose no one in this forum has partaken of the gains in this industry, either, huh? Sorry, I can't list any company ticker symbols here, lest I be banned.

I put my cajones on the line when I invest. I do my due diligence with regard to the industry-specificity (and (any) related history) of a company. Fortunately, I cut my losses at around 12% and lock in my profits on the way up, just like everyone else. Maybe I'll get burned one of these days, who knows... but my tactics have served me well during my lifetime. My apologies if'n it ain't yourn cup o tea.

Actually, you can list ticker symbols in your posts. What you may not do is spam, troll or anything else barred by the Community Rules (which are helpfully linked at the bottom of the page). If you follow the rules, you are welcome here. Consider this as the prime directive, to which all the other rules are directed --Don't be a jerk.

In particular, you should review the rule against "excessive sarcasm". Aside from violating our specific rules, you might consider that it annoys people and makes them stop listening to you. If you have an investing idea to share, by all means do. But you cannot expect on a board as diverse as ours that most, or even a few, will agree with you. You will be challenged regarding your investment thesis. The proper response is to meet the challenge with facts and analysis, not sarcastic swipes at other posters.

If you don't think you'll be able to follow the rules, let me know and I'll be happy to assist in your exit.

You might want to consider how many many other posters with your approach (both investing and attitude) have come & gone on this discussion board. Your approaches are neither particularly novel nor, in the long run, successful. The merits of your investing claims are not improved by your sarcasm nor your personal slights at other posters.

Good luck with your plan. You have a nice life now.

So, personal swipes toward me are acceptable (Lebed) but they're not to be reciprocated? That's fair.

Since this site is full of useful information - and since I obviously don't fit the mold here with regard to my investment approach - I'd like to respectfully request that permission be granted for my observance in silence from this point forward.

You don't need anyone's permission since the consequences of your actions -- to suffer or to enjoy -- are solely yours... as we, too, are free to react in our own individual way(s).

It's not your investment approach that grates. In any event, I am happy to be of service.

Wow.... another flame out.... I have not been here as long as others, but this seems to be a record in time...

Decided to check it out.... 31 hours 11 minutes... anybody flame out faster:confused:
