What does a land line cost where you live?

Was in the high 20s for us IIRC, but then we changed to Ooma and now pay less than ~$14/month with unlimited US calls (premier package).

IIRC, low 30's for basic service, plus long distance. The truly sick thing is ~40% of that is in gov't fees & taxes. I would dump the land line tomorrow if I could get reliable cell service at my house.

It costs about $25, but includes 150 minutes of long distance calls out each month. We've almost never gone over that.

Yep. They advertise the line @$16.95 but with all the access fees/taxes/etc it's around $35.

About $25 per month including all the governmental required fees and taxes Here in NW PA. Does not include long distance(which we use our cell phones for anyway).

In Alabama it's $20 a month for basic service ($35 including all the fees, surcharges, and taxes).

What is a land line? Oh yeah, I had one a long time ago.

Including all taxes, fees, and other charges, basic phone service went up from $22 about 10 years ago or less, to $29 today, and that is without any long distance service. Also, during that time they tried at least 3 times to "crash" me (I think that is the slang term?) by adding long distance service without any request from me or notification from them about it.

Completely ridiculous and soon I am going to cancel it completely.

Don't forget that it is negotiable. You don't know the real rate until you call up and threaten to cancel.

We still have a land-line. We were under $10 a month, but needed internet. Our internet comes in through our land-line since we don't have cable. Add $22 for DSL internet, so the bill is $32.04 a month including all taxes, etc.

MS must have the highest rates of anyone. With fees and all(no long distance) $41/mo. I'm getting about ready to drop it too. Might try Magic Jack or some other internet service just to have a backup for my cell phone. It does go out sometimes.

My rate is $33 per month but includes unlimited long distance calling.

I have unlimited long distance call, too. It is called Google Voice.

We're in earthquake country and on the edge of the city so dicey cell reception. About $41/mo.

Usually 40 bucks with 30 minutes of LD, DSL bill $45 A month, OneSuite for calls back east. We hit the big time this summer when Verison put up a cell tower about 20 miles away, since we are high in the mountains we can get a weak signal at times.

The big city is moving closer, buy the Milky Way is still the brightest light in the sky.

$31, I have long distance separate and that is something like $.10/min or less with no fees. Cell is too sketchy where I live, and internet isn't reliable enough either.

In the Texas Hill Country:
Residential Line access 14.00
911 equalization surcharge .06
911 fee .34
Federal Subscriber line charge 6.50
extended area service 1.00
Federal Excise tax .69
Texas State Tax 1.45
Texas Universal Service .52
Federal Universal Service 1.13

Total 25.69

Zero. When we downsized last year, we told them we just wanted internet and cable. They said we could have the land line for free. :)

Oh, for those still in dsl--this is off topic but I thought I'd mention we just cancelled the AT&T service at home in favor of a Verizon mifi device that works absolutely perfectly! Very happy to drop the now $30 cost of the dsl line. And we live pretty far out in the country but it seems to have great reception and faster Internet.

Hi Sarah thanks for the tip. What is the download/upload speed for mifi and how many devices can connect to it? I'm planning ahead for when my 2yr contract with Verizon FIOS expires in May 2014. Currently, I'm paying $66.- for a bundled FIOS Internet and home tel line which I don't really need. How much do you pay for Verizon mifi?

rec7, for my house in AZ, I pay $24 for basic tel line only.

Does that include the Federal Subscriber charge and the various universal service fees and 911 fees?
