Just signed up for UBER for upcoming Dallas trip (Elvis Costello & Steely Dan)... any tips, tricks or issues? I have a friend in Houston who swears he will never use a cab again... anyone up for UBER?

(signup was a breeze... app is user friendly...fare estimator is also easy to use)

My son uses uber quite a bit. I used it the first time with him last weekend for a 1.5 mile ride. It was quick, easy, and inexpensive. I like that there's no tipping, etc, and it was also pretty cool to see your uber car arriving on the map. Much better than a taxi.

I haven't had an occasion to try it, but both of my kids use Lyft and Uber and love them. It's interesting because neither would use a regular taxi, yet they use these services. I think they prefer Lyft but I'm not sure of the details why.

Edit to add: DS lives in Dallas, FWIW.

Recently used Uber in LA. The service is amazing. No tricks are necessary.

I'm another Houstonian who loves uber. I haven't used a taxi in almost a year since discovering this amazing service.

When I go out of town I just uber to the airport and back if I'm going to be gone longer than 2-3 days because it's cheaper than driving and parking at the airport.

I also linked my uber account to my Starwood hotels frequent guest account and since my Starwood Amex card is how I pay for uber - so I get double points for every ride.

Uber really works here where I live in Midtown/Montrose in Houston. Parking down here at night usually runs $10-15. With uber we can go between multiple places for about $5 each so I'm saving all kinds of money on parking alone. Plus I can drink and not worry about driving.

We're going to Europe next week and plan to use uber in Paris and Rome and maybe Ibiza.

We just got back from Europe last week and we used Uber in Paris (we were close to everything in Ibiza so we just walked), and tried to use it in Rome but the app showed no cars available.

The rides in Paris were great and even though almost none of the drivers spoke English (most cab drivers did) it wasn't an issue since the app gives the driver the location you want to go to. There was one great cocktail lounge in Paris that we went to several times, and it was in a small neighborhood on the left bank and the drivers had a hard time finding it, so when they called we usually just handed the phone to a bartender or bouncer and he would talk the guy in.

The greatest experience, and a good example of why I like Uber over a taxi, came when we got back home. We had an Uber XL pick us up at the airport and take us back to our places. When we were dropping my GF off at her place I had my passport in my hand (hers expires soon and we were curious about the date of mine), and at some point I laid it down in the seat and never picked it up. I didn't realize I had left it there until I got an email from Uber saying the driver had told them I had left something in the cab and gave me a temporary number to contact him.

Not only was the guy super responsive, but rather than me going to him he insisted that he would deliver the passport to me when he had a ride to my area. The next day he texted me he was close to my home, but I was 30 minutes away in the burbs eating diner with my son. The driver waited for 35 minutes, time he could have been making money with rides, to be there when I got back to return my passport. I've left things in taxis before and they've just disappeared into the ether.

I tipped the man and nominated him for a cash reward under some program that Amex and Uber are collaborating on.

I swear by Uber and use it whenever I can ... LA, SF, NY, Chicago, London, Paris, etc. We've used it all over the world and almost universally have been positively impressed and pleasantly surprised with the experience. Particularly vs taxis to and from airports, the overall process is so much better and the clever app makes it seamless and pretty easy.

I've used Uber for more than a year now. Live in Seattle but have used it in other countries/cities as well (Singapore, San Fran, San Diego, New Orleans).

Very positive experiences. The average wait time is almost always less than 10 minutes. Tip is included in fare. Cars are clean (can't be more than 10 yrs old). In Seattle 50% of the drivers drive the Prius.

The one wild card is using UBER for airport transportation. Most of the time FROM the airport you have to use "Black Car" which is a Town Car or Nice SUV. The fee's are flat (like $50 SeaTac Airport to Seattle city).

HOWEVER, going to the airport you can use UberX (much cheaper!).

Overall fares are about 40% less than a traditional cab I've found. You rate the driver and they rate you as well. Cheers.

Uber is banned from doing business in some places. DFW airport, Broward County, Florida and Las Vegas are the ones I know about for sure. Apparently the taxi companies have some deep pocketed lobbyists.

Good point on lobbyists/politicians. Portland OR taxi's fought like crazy but ultimately the mayor/city council worked it out (read: caved in).

Uber is now valued at $50B and I see an IPO coming. They have a LARGE legal team as well.

For a while I could not figure out how Uber would be sustainable in light of the established legal framework for taxi services. I thought they would eventually get shut down.

Then one day I heard that our state legislature had passed a new law regulating Uber as a new type of service -- they also banned local municipalities from regulating them.

Apparently you can just go to a higher level of government to get what you want given enough resources.

We have Uber here in Peru but myself and most people I know use easytaxi which has a great app and the wait time is always less than 4 min and all the cars are new black toyota's. Cost is about 20% more than a traditional taxi but well worth it when a 30 min ride cost's about $6.00.

I really like Uber service and prices.
One Uber driver, whose car I rode in, equated current times to 'Gold Rush'. He lives 2 hours out of the Bay Area but drives for Uber in Bay Area 2-3 days a week. Makes more money than he can hope to make in his town. And really likes this opportunity.

Uber rocks. Do ask it for a price estimate though. I've been a bit surprised a couple of times. Not enough to dissuade me from using it, just enough to make me notice. I'm still a huge uber fan.

I have only used Uber black cars, never Uber X. I have friends who've used uber x and say it was fine, I just haven't gone there.

St Louis too. It's a shame, when I lived in Southern California I used them a lot.

Would you use Uber in a city like Santa Rosa CA with a population of 170k ? Thinking of doing this soon.

Used it in Dallas, Rolling Stones concert. Great system. We actually went to eat hrs earlier and signed up and tried uber. Worked out well at the concert. YES WE will use it again and may be a part time job in retirement 😀

A neighbor at my campground drives Uber in Chicago. She and her husband.
No details, except that they both like what they're doing. He earns $2000/wk... 5 days, and she earns an average of $400, working the weekends. This allow both to give quality time to their two young 7 and 9 y.o. daughters.

Am sure there are downsides, but her comment "people are almost always nice" said it all for me.
