Class of 2016

I was originally slated to be class of 2016 until an unplanned early departure in 2013. Our original plans were to pull the plug April 1 2016. DW is generally on track to hit that date, possibly even earlier.

She resigned in September 2015 but their retention offer was too good to pass up. She's still getting paid for full time, but officially works four days per week. They also switched her to telecommuting/work from home status. There's also an understanding that four days is the max, and if it doesn't take 4 days to do the work, the days can be 4 very short days. DW takes 2-3 breaks per day to work out, go out for walks with me and the kids, etc. Between vacation time and holidays, she often works only 3 days per week, so 4 day weekends are pretty common. Very nice schedule and she feels silly to give up this crazy arrangement (OMY and all that).

There are also massive layoffs coming to her company but probably not to our low-cost geographic area (NYC and London are getting hit instead). So some slight hope she'll get a fat 9+ month severance package within the next 6-12 months (if she lasts that long).

class of 2016

I agreed to work half time next year for one year. So add me to the list at 12/31/2016. I am looking for 2016 as my trial year at 50%.

We're moving up from April 1, 2017 to Sept 1, 2016. Risking of running out of life seems like it is now higher than risk of running out of money. Nothing wrong medically, just small things like numb hands, weight creeping up, overall stress, etc., that suggests sooner rather than later is much better. Also, we'll move to Orcas Island from San Diego County on that date. That really cements it as we have been waiting far too long for this transition.

I was on the 2014 list and reached FI that year but OMY'ed to 2016. I'm going to go on a 3 month sabbatical starting 11/20, and I have some vacation days to use up, so I'm nearly done; just a few work days left.
 
I see there are 4 of us timed for April 1, 2016 ... I hope you are all keying in on the Foolish humor of that date too :)

Good news for number 3 on the list.... mega corp had a restructuring (3rd major one in 10 years) and I "volunteered" to retire!! They were thinking of eliminating my role and I participated in the conversations to make sure they eliminated it... Made sense financially and great for my mental health... so six more days as my last day is this Friday and joining the class of 2015. Good luck to all on their 2016 plans

The average age in the US has risen to 62. In 2004 and earlier it was 59 and lower. Actual age of retirement has steadily been five years less than "expected" or planned for (US workers)

IMO anything before age 59 is early.

I really had no retirement date planned until just recently and thought that i might work a few more years. After my last visit to the corporate office, I decided that I had had enough and it was time to start the process. For me, this is early as I wasn't planning anything and now I am looking at seven months and done. Early is relative since we have some retiring in their forties and some people die before they get the chance.
 
Ok, I'm going to have to barge in here. Yes, I was on the class of 2017, but megacorp just announced 2 days ago that they are moving our entire business to the west coast over next year and into 2017... and everyone's job will be gone. Too bad. If I let them terminate me, I get a severance based on 30 yrs service, some other bonus, all totaling well into 6 figures, and I will get to "walk" sooner than I planned (1 Feb 2017). And they will bridge me to my full pension date. So please, make room on the stage for me... no tears shed.

Slim chance they could retain me into the first half of 2017, but seem very unlikely at this point.

Where do we order cap and gowns??

It just occurred to me, DW will be in the class of 2016. This is a big deal to me as I have been [-]goofing off[/-] retired for 8 1/2 years. Once she retires, it will feel like real retirement with the freedom to just take off when we feel like it, visit family other than at holidays and hopefully move out of this God forsaken state (MI).

Never mind. I decided that I just don't want to OMY so I'm sticking with 1/31. The extra cash just isn't worth it.
