Myths we live by!

You shouldn't eat pizza and take a shower at the same time.

Not true if you have something as low-tech as an umbrella. Or perhaps if you have a low-mounted shower head.

But why does it have to be pizza and not some other food? Does it make a difference if I want to eat spaghetti or a bowl of Pho while showering?

Right, which is why I stated it in a thread titled "Myths we live by!" ;)

It was a myth that I mistakenly believed until one day when I was both extremely hungry and extremely dirty after an attempt to summit Kings Peak in Utah. I was trying to decide which need to address first, and finally figured out I could do both at the same time. It was an epiphany.

It just happened to be pizza in my case. I suppose the myth is equally untrue for many other foods.

More in line with the OP list, a major myth that leads to many relationship issues is that Emotions/feelings are somehow intrinsically valid and if you make me feel bad, it is your fault.

We color every situation and our perception of it through the filter of our past experiences and beliefs. We alone are responsible for our feelings. No one can make you feel bad without your willing participation

To the OP, thank you....I had not heard of DBT before. Lately i've been reading about the "neuroplasticity" of the brain....that is an interesting subject and it looks like much of the research is relatively recent.

"you shouldn't pay off your home because you can make more money in the stock market"

heh heh heh - seemed like a good idea at the time. Pun intended. Don't guess which is which. I mean otherwise I wouldn't whine. :greetings10: :nonono:

If a person is a jealous control freak they love you. If they hit you but are sorry you made them do it that proves they love you.

My FA is a really nice guy.

Good one, certainly agree.

I once lived by a myth, but then we got married, and now she's a myth-ess. :)

I was reading about DBT and came across the following and thought it's worth sharing:

MYTHS WE LIVE BY!

____1. There is a right way to feel in every situation.

____2. Letting others know that I am feeling bad is a weakness.

____3. Uncomfortable feelings are bad and destructive.

____4. Being emotional means being out of control.

____5. All painful emotions are a result of a bad attitude.

____6. If others don’t approve of how I am feeling, I obviously shouldn’t feel the way that I do.

____7. Other people are the best judge of how I am feeling.

____8. Painful emotions are not really important and should be ignored.

Can you think of any other myths?

Wow, I think Disney used the above list for their animated movie 'Inside Out', a movie we watched last night on Netflix.

I always suspected Disney used DBT, now there's no doubt. :)

You can't possibly be having the best retirement experience ever, if you aren't paying megabucks for the privilege of dragging yourself all over the world. Again.

After all, we all have a deep seated inner need to [-]travel[/-] be treated like cattle and pay for it. Why stay at home where things are as you wish them to be, when you can be bored to tears and endure "luxury" conditions that are an absolute nightmare?
+1

Posters here all retire early. :hide:

I thought this thread was about myths? ;)

Yea, I get the math part of making more in the market than our low mortgage rates but really wonder how many do put that "extra" money in the market?

Full disclosure I still have a mortgage but for piece of mind reasons would prefer not to at ER time. Cheers.
