Blow that Dough! - 2018

You guys are scaring me about my new toy!

Don't worry about it.

I was 17, working at a sawmill when my buddy got his pant leg caught in the arbor running the 60" headsaw. It was attached to a 100 HP diesel turning it at 600 RPM.

He was very lucky, his cheap jeans ripped away from his body, or he would have been flopped to death(I'm glad that didn't happen, as I am fond of the sob).

When the mill shut down we all looked around at each other in an eerie silence. This place was 5+ miles away from a road and we had almost lost a co-worker to a stupid accident. That reality hit all of us.

My buddy is standing there shaking, in his tidy whities, as another crazy guy looks up and says "you just lost your pants in front of the wrong bunch of 6 guys".

There was a nervous laugh, but we all knew what could have happened.

Enjoy the toy, what's the worst that can happen?✌

SawStop is a great choice, they were recently acquired by the company that owns Festool.
Festool makes very high quality power tools so quality will only go up.

I have a SawStop table saw on my 2018 acquisition list.

When I was 16 I drove a carpenter to the ER, he had cut his hand 90% off at the palm, only a thin flap remained. He ran it through a table saw on a home build jobsite.

Something you never forget.

After a stupid hand injury at work, I was in Hand rehab with an airplane pilot who inadvertently ran his fingers through a table saw. Our doctor had no bedside manner at all. The pilot asked him after the surgery, about how long it would take before he flew again. Fly an air plane? Hell, I trying to get you to be able to wipe your a$$ again with the same hand. I was recovered before he ever graduated out of rehab, so I don't know if he was able to fly again. I do know that the doc saved several guitarists' finger allowing them to play again. Table saws are dangerous, but then again so are women!

Had to add to this thread after reading the one about faucets. We completed a major remodel of our house just over a year ago. The not inexpensive kitchen faucet crapped out a week after warranty expiration. The plumbing supply company took pity on me and sold me the replacement at cost (different brand)...$500 instead of the $1,000 retail they charge. DH does not see these bills as well as a ton of other 'splurges' associated with our remodel. I do tell him the actual cost when he asks and he's learned not to ask . The plumber did say that the brand & model I chose was an excellent product.

If you bought that faucet with credit cards, they double the manufacturer's warranty or add a year to the manufacturer's warranty (it varies between cards)... might be worth checking into if you paid by credit card.... I collected $700 from Discover card for repairs when our refrigeratior crapped out shortly after the manufacturer's one-year warranty.

I have used a $100 cheapie table saw w/o any guard for years. Kickback is my greatest fear. But I carefully measure the distance from the front and the rear of the blade before locking the fence and after I lock the fence. If the fence is square to the blade kickback will not happen. Unless there is something really weird with the wood, like a nail or worse.

But I don't run scrap through the saw so I don't worry about that.

I didn't want a replacement faucet. The design was faulty and the part that crapped out would continue to do so. It was a screw in button that controlled the flow type rather than a toggle switch. I was glad to see the first faucet go.

But...my new microwave oven is now broken, in that you can barely see the display panel. DH tried to adjust the brightness and researched on line...it appears the circuit board needs to be replaced. Will check to see which cc I used to pay for it and it may be covered. Thank you!

Speaking of blowing dough, I blew away a lot 12 years ago when buying the 2nd home in the high country for the summer respite from the scorching heat. It cost more than my main home. And the maintenance and operating costs.

The Dow was at 10,000 then. It's at 25,000 now, while RE market there is flat. It's a lot of dough. No regret though.

The new home is on a ridge line, allowing me to look down to the surrounding national forest from its large rear deck. Told my wife that if we did not buy, there may not be another one like it.

If I did not buy and invest that money in the market, that money would be worth a lot. But at this point, I am older and would have missed out on 12 years of good life.

Anyway, that's some time ago but I have blown enough dough, I do not feel deprived and need to blow anymore. I am satisfied. :)

Last weekend I spent $2.99 to download some beautiful new jigsaw puzzles for my iPad jigsaw puzzle program. They are providing me with hours of fun! I listen to free podcasts to occupy my mind while doing them. The puzzles are all photos of colorful birds.

I don't know what the rest of you like to do in retirement, but to me, this sure beats other forms of couch potato activity.

we always have a puzzle on the table. I've taken 300 or more to salvation army.

I paid a little less for my vacation condo back in 2014(bought primary in 2015) but it is worth a good bit more than my primary home now. Got lucky on the timing. Unlikely I will ever see much appreciation in the primary as the RE market is flat in my area. And has been for a long time.

I broke down and ordered a new Maule M-7 airplane and three battery packs that brought the total to just over $350. What made the sale for me was seeing the steep dive & then landing starting at 2:07 in the video. There's plenty of room in the back yard for that.

Got a HyperTherm 45XP Plasma Cutter today, one of my 3 new retirement toys. Great machine for cutting metal.

( not my video)

I've been on a terror the last week;

11 grand for the kitchen redo
another grand for the faucets and range hood

Seems almost insignificant to have only spent 5 hundred bucks on a patio gate and 10 lbs of Alaskan King Crab claws & leg pieces yesterday - :)

I guess our trip to The Copper Canyon qualifies: 55000 pesos for a 6 day small group tour. Two of us. Paid much of it in advance at a worse exchange rate.

That puzzle program sounds interesting. Which one is it? I’d like to try something new.

Thanks!

12 grand? You must be a great negotiator. Most people I know who have redone a kitchen have spent 20K and up. Maybe I should hire you to negotiate my kitchen redo when I get around to it
.

Hehe, yeah the first guy wanted 32 grand - :)

I didn't negotiate with the second guy at all. But it will be 2 months before work begins. The expensive guy could start in a couple of weeks.

On a bad day of the market, I blew a lot more than that.

I am sure there are rich posters here who blew a few hundred $K every day the last few days.

If it keeps going like this, soon there will not be anything left to blow.

There are a million of them, aren't there! So, it's kind of hard to describe but I'll try.

If you go to the app store, under games, and search on "jigsaw puzzle for iPad free" it is the second one, entitled "Jigsaw Puzzle - play fun puzzles & brain games" with an icon that has a green jigsaw puzzle piece on a tan background.

Hope this helps! I enjoy it a lot. They give you a free puzzle every day, and some free puzzle packs but then when you get hooked it's fun to buy new ones. You can choose how many pieces you want every time you work a puzzle.

Great description, W2R. I also found the same app is available for Android in the Play Store. Thanks. :flowers:

Super!!! I am so glad it was possible to find it.

I love, love, love this app. I haven't tried any other jigsaw puzzle apps, so there may be others that are even better. But I can't imagine how.

As for Blowing That Dough, apparently I'm not doing it well at all so far this year. My projections for annual spending, based on the first 3 months of this year, are only 60% of what I usually spend. I am pretty sure that this is due to subconscious stress about market conditions and inflation. This is just ridiculous.

Ooohh, Tango!

How much one would pay to learn to dance like this with nice ladies?
