I have COVID-19

This is a major problem in our country--people who might have had the virus can't get tested. How are we going to ever reopen if we don't know who has had it and is now immune?

That is so disappointing to here. I’m sorry you went through that. This country needs to get to a point where we don’t have to ration these tests.

I’ve heard that some private doctors are offering tests for a couple hundred dollars where they are not restricting anyone who is wiling to pay.

This is my concern - they don't have enough testing capability. There are still not enough virus tests, and the antibody test is talked about but nowhere on the horizon. Yet, they want to re-open businesses. Then why did we bother to shut everything down to begin with? Seems like we have made no real progress despite all the economic (and death) toll that this shutdown has taken :(

Thanks Ready. I don't need to know that badly. I did put in a call to my doctor today who said just stay the course if your feeling well (i.e. rest and fluids).

Maybe true, but the testing facility near us was already closed for the weekend. They open Monday at 8 am (drive thru) so I may go then to confirm. Will decide Sunday night, probably, as long as symptoms don't get worse over the weekend.

OP,

Edited: Ok, I read the recent posts. I am glad you are feeling better! Sorry about the testing hassle. It shouldn't be that way.

I said in the testing thread that it's a problem if they want to do contact tracing unless they can also do widespread antibody testing, now that we are 4 months into this. Before ordering someone to quarantine for 14 days, provide an antibody test to make sure it's warranted first.

Here’s how to get tested for the coronavirus in L.A. County
Four new drive-through coronavirus testing sites opened in Los Angeles County on Monday.

The locations are at a city-owned parking lot in Bell, at Beverly Community Hospital in Montebello, at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in MacArthur Park and at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, county officials announced over the weekend.

Any resident with symptoms of COVID-19 can now make a same- or next-day appointment for testing, the county announced Friday. Symptoms include fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

Previously, testing was limited to those 65 and older or with underlying health conditions, but earlier this month, the county expanded eligibility requirements to include anyone with symptoms.

Officials have said that more widespread testing and contact tracing are key to assessing the scope of the pandemic and taking steps toward lifting stay-at-home orders.

To make an appointment, residents must visit the county’s testing website and fill out a questionnaire. If they are eligible, they will receive an appointment confirmation number by email, which they must bring along with a photo ID in order to be tested.

Though most of the testing sites are drive-throughs, they also can accommodate walk-ups, provided people make an appointment, officials said. Those without internet access can call 211 to make an appointment. No one will be turned away because of immigration status or lack of insurance, officials said.

Test results take three to four days, and those who are positive will be notified by phone, while those who are negative will receive an email.

Is the medical community absolutely certain that if you have the antibodies for COVID-19 that you are 100% immune now? Tomorrow? A week from now? A month from now?

You'll have to excuse my skepticism since they have been wrong about certain aspects with regards to COVID-19 since the beginning.

Thanks Ready, but I am not an LA County resident so I can't use any of those facilities. Maybe helpful to someone else though.

I read that these new conditions for being given the test apply to all of California though. I wonder if the person who you saw was giving you old information.

Thanks. I see one 10 minutes from where I live. Hope I will never need to use it.

How will you know if they need an ambulance if they take a turn for the worse?

Bag up the trash and then throw it out the window . With proper PPE one could Rebag it and throw it away safely.
No one should live in a room with bags of trash for 4 weeks.

Regarding testing... DS had flu like symtoms two Fridays ago... his fever only lasted a day, but his employer told him that he was not to return to work until the sooner of 14 days or a negative COVID test.

He arranged to have a test done. He got the results a couple days after he had served his 14 days in the penalty box and returned to work. He was negative.

pb, what does DS do for a living? I am able to work from home but if returning to work was contingent on a test (i.e. essential worker) that would have made a difference, at least in my county.

From what the tells me the operators work at a social distance apart.

Did he paid for his time away per company instruction's. ...I wonder how companies are handling this.

Still, it would be nice to know once and for all. I don't hold out much hope that antibody testing will be any better than the actual virus testing, meaning it will be in short supply and not widely available despite what the various talking heads say on the news.

At least I am still feeling good, and that is the most important thing.

Given the population of the US and a constrained testing capacity, Covid tests for everybody is not in the cards. As for the antibody testing it will be the same, but they will most likely do a random sampling in specific geographies and then make some statistical assumptions.

OP....based on your initial post.....you NEVER had a confirmatory test for Covid 19. Correct?

Hence , how can you say "I have Covid-19?"

You MIGHT have Covid 19 and you might not.....but without a test.....you are just guessing.

Do whatever you need to do to get tested ASAP!

Only then will you know for sure. Anything else is just speculation.

She’s not guessing. Her doctor diagnosed it as very likely and proceeded accordingly, and she can’t get tested - she tried but she’s not old enough. And even if she tested negative she might still have it as false negatives are common.

Disagree. It is ALL about testing. That is why The Governors of many states are reluctant to reopen without adequate testing. Drs. Birx and FAuci have also stated this.

The OP's MD said Covid was "suspected" not "very likely." A big difference.
Also, the false negatives with Covid are primarily due to the collection of samples....not the actual lab testing. False negatives should decline as collection techniques improve.

Any data to back up that false negative claim..as in the actual percentage of false negatives...

Based on this, I've decided if I have symptoms, I will not attempt to get tested for CV19. If I live through the illness, be it CV19 or not I will try to get an antibody test. That's more valuable to me since I don't want to go on a ventilator and I don't think the hospital can do much more than that. The drugs they give could kill me too. I've decided to depend on my immune system.

I agree with Rianne. I would certainly want a CV19 test, but they're not easy to come by and heck, I'm sick, I don't want to run around and deal with bureaucracy and I can understand why caninelover tried and has given up.

When well, I would find a way, even if I had to pay for it, to get the antibody test. I'd for sure want to know if I can go back to living a semi normal life or not asap. But, I just don't see how a CV19 test changes anything in caninelover's life until she feels better.

I may have had it a few weeks ago, but I decided that I wasn’t going to the hospital until I started having difficulty breathing. I figured that I could survive the fever, chills, stomach ache, diarrhea, fatigue and dizziness at home on my own.

Our county does not test people unless they have symptoms, and since I didn’t have a cough or difficulty breathing I figured that there was no point in going since I wouldn’t get a test.

DW had similar symptoms. We both would like to get an antibody test down the road.
