Flu Shots 2020

It's been 2 days and no more pain.

Got mine today, at the pharmacy in our local Mariano's grocery store (owned by Kroger, I think). I went there last year as my first Medicare paid shot, and they had me on record, so I figured easiest to go back there, and it was.

The person in front of me had an appointment, hmmmm, maybe I should have done that? No big deal, they took me next, was in/out pretty quickly (15 M?)

Got mine yesterday at the Kaiser drive through flu clinic. Real smooth operation. 3 cars ahead of me and wait was just 5 minutes. Got the "senior dose" and was advised the arm would hurt for 2 days. It did. Yesterday a lot and today down to a dull ache.

Other than a sore arm, no effects.

It's been 2 days and no more pain.

The pharmacist (or tech, I didn't check her badge, she seemed to be in charge) told me to massage that spot over the next day to keep the soreness down. I don't recall anyone else telling me that, and I've only ever had a pretty mild soreness, but I'll do it, it may help.

Got mine yesterday at Rite-Aid. Downloaded and filled out the form beforehand so was in and out in about 15 minutes. No charge. My ACA plan covers it when done at participating pharmacies.

Thanks for that info. I went to a Kroger drive thru clinic yesterday and got the senior dose. Last night I kept waking up because my arm was really hurting. Tonight, its the dull ache you also mention.

I had one tell me once to bend my elbow and flap that arm sideways 10 times at least every 15 minutes for the first hour to get it out of the muscle. And that after that it was what it was.

It sounded logical.

Got my flu shot yesterday. Woke up with aches and joint pain. Now I’m running a low grade fever. DH never has an issue and I always feel under the weather for a few days. Still worth it. I remember how having the flu feels and my reactions to the shot are nothing compared to that.

I was told to massage, move it often and use ice as needed.

I did all that. Still hurt for 2 days - :)

But she told me it would hurt for 2 days, so she was right!

I got mine today at a Walgreens, took 5 minutes. Not sure if having an appointment helped or just no one there. I asked if I could have Shringrix and they said not unless you are 65 or have an Rx. Nope neither.

That seems odd. Our Walgreens didn't need age >65 or an rx. Maybe state regulations?

I thought it was odd but they didn't say why. I wasn't sure if my doc would call in an rx for a shot and don't want to go right now. But I was curious.

Got it, no problems

My DW and me got the senior dose flu shot at Safeway 10/2/2020, no appointment, no waiting, no line, took about 10 minutes total with most of the time doing paperwork. An impulse purchase while grocery shopping.
No cost to us, covered 100% by Medicare Part B.
No reactions and no soreness at the injection site. They must have used a new needle not the used square type!

Since DW's and my flu shots were nothing close to the Shingrex shots, we more or less forgot about them even though the nice lady giving the shots told us how to avoid pain. I think I followed her advice once (several have mentioned above). I think I bumped the spot once and winced, but that's about it. NOTHING compared to shingles shot, trust me on this one (though YMMV.)

PHP:
As I mentioned earlier I got the shingle and flu shots Friday. One in each arm. The flu shot didn't bother me much and shingle one not too bad but certainly more soreness there. I didn't play golf today but could have. Plan to play tomorrow. Massaging the arms did help btw so thanks for suggesting that.

Hubster got the flu and pneumonia shot on Thursday. Same arm. Sore arm that afternoon. Really sore the next day. Plus he was fatigued and achy the next day. He was fine yesterday.

The boys and I are going to the Kaiser Flu clinic on Friday after we go and renew their passports. (Passport renewal has to be in person because this is first passport as adult. )

Got ours about a week ago. $5 from Target pharmacy, and got paid $25 each from our insurance.

Weirdly enough (and also hooray) I haven't had to pay my premium out of my own pocket in about 2 months and won't have any premiums at all the rest of the year and into 2021 if I keep this insurance due to the insurance company's incentive programs.

I was already going to get a flu shot because the best incentive for me anyway is not getting the flu or at least making sure if I contract it, it's as mild as possible, but this is lovely getting paid to do things I'd do anyway.

I'm sure it's short term, but in my neck of the woods here in North Jersey there's a shortage of the 65+ flu shot. I called every CVS and Walgreen's in my general area with no success. I was able to get the last one available at a local supermarket pharmacy.

Seems strange. We got our Shingrix shots at our local Walgreen's this year with no RX and we are under 65.

Years ago prior to Shingrix, I inquired about the shingles shot at my local pharmacy as 2 family members then a coworker came down with it. I was told it would be on my dime as I was not old enough for insurance to cover it. I decided to wait the year out. Perhaps that's the issue here?

That sounds likely. It is not unreasonable for a pharmacy to assume that people will not want something if their insurance won't cover it. I bet most wouldn't. And rather than discuss the insurance, the pharmacist just states an age limit.

Just scheduled mine with my doctor's office, for the very first appt. of the day this Friday. I figure if I can't find a place that's doing them outside, going to the medical office first thing in the morning would be the safest!

Got my flu shot at CVS on 9/18. Schedule any appointment I can for first thing Monday morning. The offices will be cleaner.

Visited two Walgreens & a Kroger today. All three out of seniors mega dose. All three claimed they'd be resupplied mid-week. We'll see.

Probably right. My insurance covers it over 50 though but they might just assume it won't. I will look into it another day. This one has sucked (for unrelated reasons).

Got my flu shot at Walgreens today. It was a non event, no line, no appointment.

Since I have seen what DW went through with shingles, I would want my pharmacist to give me all the options (including the costs for full-ride-on-my-dime.) I'd gladly pay a few grand to avoid what DW went through. IIRC the full-ride is maybe $250?? Cheap at multiples of the price vs shingles - which CAN be life and health threatening.

The reason I sort of question whether the pharmacist would "assume" someone would reject the cost (or lack of insurance) is that (back before I made an insurance change) I was always warned about the exact cost of one drug NOT on my current insurance companies Tier (?) of their formulary. IIRC the cost was around $500 for 3 months. Really expensive but needed, so I bit the bullet. I appreciated the heads up about the cost and info that the insurance co. didn't want to help (very much) with the cost.

I'm not an expert, so you may be correct. I'm just going on what I have observed (more than once) regarding a somewhat similar situation. Therefore, YMMV. :greetings10:
