    Investing as a hobby

 following... This is also interesting as a hobby for me. All this buy and hold that got us to FI, was kinda boring. I've got places to make free trades.

Need advice for son re: air force

Many good points made. Army Vet here, specific goal for joining was for maturity and money to return to college. Drove a truck for a "short" three year enlistment, got the GI Bill and the Army College fund. (Not sure of the available programs now, this was over 30 years ago) One thing I...

    Breakthrough club

Your story is similar to mine. Mild cold like symptoms, wasn't tested. A few days after I was feeling better DW lost sense of smell, so got tested, positive. Never more than mild cold symptoms, quarantined for 10 days. We're both Pfizer. Happy I took the vaccine, also happy my immune system...

Is There Any Yearning to Be Recognized for Your FIRE Success?

Opposite I'll take the opposite viewpoint. I would like to be recognized (by others than on this forum). But mainly to show FIRE is an achievable goal and so I can pass along how being FI can help you enjoy things others might find frustrating. For example, I enjoy driving my 14y/o Toyota...

    - Working since 16, but didn't put a plan together until I was 30. I've been working off and refining that plan over the last twenty years.

Is it time to cut back on pre-tax savings?

If I don't change my after tax savings, it would come from my 401(k) through SEPP or withdraws that include a 10% penalty. I will plan my after tax withdrawals up to the top of our tax bracket and put the remainder into a Roth.

Is it time to cut back on pre-tax savings?

Thank you, I will I believe you're correct. I'm budgeting our expenses to require about about $85,000 so not much over 22% Thank you, I agree and I'm going to spend some time planning each one of your points, thank you. We have 74k in Roth accounts, I don't think we've contributed to in a...

Is it time to cut back on pre-tax savings?

Long time lurker, infrequent poster. I have a question for the collective experienced. For about 20 years I've been working against a plan for early retirement. The plan has mostly been about maximizing pre-tax savings for my spouse and I (403b and 401k respectively) and paying down debt...

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

I would imagine that it was part of his compensation agreement. (there's a lot of high earners in Houston) I'm in my 11th year in my 401k, max each year + 4% match, it's just over 460k. If I can get 8.7% over the next 5 years (my retirement goal) it will be at 1m. It would be at 1.8m if I...

    Are you still an athlete?

Definitive? No, but a number I've used is: "Jogging is defined as going at a pace of less than 6 mph, while running is defined as anything faster than 6 mph." Google "the difference between running and jogging" and you'll see many sites that use this description. I run a dozen races a year...

Beware Small Dogs - You Could Get Hooked...

We've always had medium sized dogs. We've always had medium sized dogs. But after losing our second ~50# short haired female mutt. We decided to go big. She is a rescue and will be four in January. We fostered another Dane before her, it was too hard giving her up and we adopted instead the...
