    Alternatives to pension survivor benefit

rbat, civil service pensions do often take a beating here, but that is okay with me. I do not spend any time defending it or justifying it. However, there is great advice on this board enregards to your question. Stability of the pension being one, my pension for example is a state pension...

    Deferred Comp vs. ROTH IRA

I have a very similar pension situation and a 457b deferred comp plan. For what its worth I max out a Roth IRA and put the rest in the 457b. On some advice from this board I checked closer into the fees of my 457b, while not as bad as feared, they were much more than the fees associated with...

    New and discouraged investor

Its impressive to have paid off six figures worth of debt in 3 years, congrats. In my opinion dollar cost averaging (DCA) is a solid investing plan. I would decide how much I needed to save for my house in a couple of years and invest the rest regularly in your funds for retirement. Trying...

New here, any other fire department members here?

I do have concerns over the future of our pension system. I feel quite sure that I will pay for health insurance benefits for my wife and I upon retirement. The COLA will probably be the current 1.5% or less. I have less worry about the total pension fund defaulting. Mainly because the...

Good to hear from you leftbucket. I work 24 on and 48 off for a municipality. "Off Day" I guess is slang terminology if you will. We have a 20 and out pension that tops out at about the 27th year. Health insurance is covered for the retired employee but there is a premuim for spouses. I...

New here, 13 years to go!

Thank you. With 10% down ($15,000) the property will net approximately 400 a month with 8% vacancy and moderate repairs/maintenance. We plan to use the cash flow to help facilitate about a 12 year pay off.
