    Do you love your home?

We overpay for a House I don’t like. :-( Moving from Europe 2 weeks ago we rented sight unseen with only a friend walking through it. There are no parks or playgrounds, very few children here (if any), the house is massive, and we discovered a raw sewage leak from upstairs to our kitchen on our...

Car advice? Want combo of good mileage/price/maintenance

***UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POST****** We bought a certified pre-owned 2013 Honda Civic LX with 33,000 miles. It had one previous owner. It was a no-haggle price of $11,900 and out the door price of $13,540. It comes with 7 years of free oil changes, tire rotations, and VA state inspections...

Active duty 19 years, big decision ahead

You mentioned transferring your GI Bill - if you plan to, do it soon. The DoD announced a couple days ago that they won’t allow people with over 16 years of service to do so starting next year. https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/07/12/pentagon-slashes-gi-bill-transfer-eligibility-window.html

Car advice? Want combo of good mileage/price/maintenance

Such interesting advice - thank you! I added Kia, Prius, and Suburus to the list to check out too. More data: my husband and I aren’t tall people, just statistically average. (5’4 and 5’9). My new job has a free plug in station for electric cars. Bonus is those spots are right up front next...

Car advice? Want combo of good mileage/price/maintenance

Problem solved! I don’t know why I didn’t think of a Corvette!! :-D Seriously though, it looks like I’ll be checking out Corollas and Civics in addition to the Fit.

Car advice? Want combo of good mileage/price/maintenance

We are moving back to the US after 3 years of military overseas. We are bringing back with us our 2 identical 2006 Honda Odysseys. My husband is a YouTube hobby mechanic and keeps them in good running condition. Once we get to NoVA, we plan on buying a commuter car. We will leave one van with...

    Dry-aged beef

Carpaccio? I’ve had it in Italy and Germany so it’s likely common in Switzerland. It’s like a thin sliced raw roast beef. When I’ve had it it was drizzled with olive oil and salt, and ate with a baguette.

Is this really a "wealth" seminar?

One is a misogynistic pig and one is not. Honestly, watching the video of Robbins talking about how he has friends who hire less qualified men over more qualified but attractive women was disgusting. I’m glad he apologized but I’ll take Jerry Seinfeld over that any day.

Is this really a "wealth" seminar?

I was appalled by the recent clip of Tony Robbins’ views on women.

Early 30s military couple, 2028 FIRE goal!

I probably should have been more specific when I said an overseas tour is a financial hit....it probably depends on where you would be stationed if you weren’t overseas, what the dollar=euro is doing, and almost certainly on whether you are dual-mil. In our case we were in the DC area for 4...

Early 30s military couple, 2028 FIRE goal!

Welcome! I’m relatively new to the site too, and in a similar situation as you. We are both O-5’s (I just pinned on 2 days ago!) and also only have one GI Bill. I used mine when I was enlisted in the Guard, when it was the MGIB. We are moving back to a HCOL area this summer, but overseas now...

    Spent money now or later?

First sergeants are my favorite people in the world! It’s a tough job....thank you for your service.

    Spent money now or later?

Thank you both! I have read Doug Nordman’s entire book - it was excellent. I guess it seems frivolous to spend 2 housing allowances when we could spend one. Unfortunately metros don’t go to Joint Base Andrews, where I will be. My husband will be at Ft McNair the 1st year then likely the...

    Spent money now or later?

My spouse and I are both active duty military and will have pensions. For active duty pensions, he is retirement eligible in 3 years and me in 6 years. Our pensions together should be approximately $9,000-10,000/month. (I’ll retire as O-5 with 29 years and he’ll retire as O-6 with around 21...
