Thank you! I've bookmarked for future reference.

15% Marginal Tax Roth vs Traditional?

Likely 12% Federal, 3% state. When my daughter was in a similar position, I advised her towards a Roth IRA. Her then-employer either didn't do a 401(k) match, or it required remaining with them longer than she expected to. Now at 22% Federal, ~8% state, she is using a standard IRA after...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

I have three such stress cracks to fix in our house. Covering the crawl space floor with plastic seems to have produced some new settlement (or the opposite) in our house. About how much material did you remove from the cracks before filling them? Like you, I have noticed the amount of time...

We have them in Central Virginia and my wife hates them.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

I took your advice and updated my avatar with a larger image, but I did have one question. What does it mean when it says under "Privacy" in the "Your Account" section, that there is a choice of settings for "View Identities"?

Colorado Hwy 50 CLOSED west of Gunnison

I thought I'd been over this bridge, and a look at a map confirms it.

    Airline mileage programs

Especially since retiring, I don't fly often enough to bother with frequent flyer miles. I do get an occasional free hotel night from Marriott or Holiday Inn/IHG.

Forum Downtime - software update scheduled April 23/24

I missed the news and was surprised by the forum being closed yesterday. I recognize that software changes are necessary from time to time, both for functionality and an up-to-date appearance of the site, and roll with such changes pretty easily. Glad that all appears to have gone well with...

How much do you spend per month on fitness?

If you don't count driving to the mountains to hike, a Y membership and a couple of pieces of clothing and a pair of sneakers a year. If you do count hiking, how much does 6K or more miles a year of driving cost?

    Buying a New Car

I would have enjoyed a turbo Outback, but it was way out of my budget, either new or used with lower miles driven. Even a 4-cylinder model with the standard engine would have been a stretch unless I went back before 2020. The CX-5 may be slightly small, but I enjoy driving it a lot.

    Buying a New Car

I'm a hiker and just traded in my Subaru for a Mazda. I've had several people ask whether I was supposed to do that.

Why are older Americans drinking so much

That's my memory of the WWII generation, men drinking like it was their job. I don't think that their children are matching that particular achievement in retirement.

    2024 Umbrella Policy costs

About $190 for $1 million. A simple one-story brick house and two cars.

    Kindle fans?

My wife recently had the battery fail on a Kindle. Even with DIY battery replacement, the economics said to buy a new device. Of course, it was slightly smaller and I had to stick it to her case with double-sided tape.

Why are older Americans drinking so much

I'm at about two beers a week right now, down from three or four in the past year because of a new medical diagnosis. Like several people here, I know someone who took to drinking too much in retirement. Though my guess is that most people who drink excessively in retirement were doing it...
