Retirement crisis: From bad to worse

Quelle Ironique! Switch mortgage broker for lawyer, put the divorce a year or so out there, and you've described my brother to a T. I reckon he'll come looking for his handout from his LBYM brotha about the time I skip country to FIRE.....

    Brazil Travel Recommendations?

November a bit too cold to hit the beaches at MarDel or Punta, but Floripa should be OK. Actually, the whole coast up from past Boicucanga, SP to Trindade and Parati to Ilha Grande should not be missed. Spent several w/e's doing just that in Oct/Nov. 2004 and not crowded at all. Once you get...

    PERMANENTLY moving overseas

Living overseas is easier than you think... A) Go electronic as much as possible. Use parent's or sibling's address as a fall-back position. Use a forwarder only if you are shipping something of value that can't easily be found in your new home (but beware import duties). Be prepared to...

    25yo, want freedom by 40

One thing that bears repeating here is that you have 15 years in front of you to FIRE....a lot can happen between now and then....and not all of it under your control. Having a spending/saving plan that adds a G every month is good, but be prepared to constantly revisit it, year on year, until...

Oi galera - Wishing to retire to S. America (& soon)

I had originally conceived the sabbatical years as primarily educational, with secondary motives of job hunting/case the countryside looking for opportunities. Brazilians that I met couldn't fathom how I could live on my own without work, in Ipanema, travelling the country with regularity, and...

    Ready for some Sage Advice

With regard to the SEPP, the 5 year min rule only applies if you are 50+ when you initiate it. If it's earlier than that, then the take until 59.5 rule applies. Since you are so young, I'd try to bulk up that 401.K to $250M or so before looking into a SEPP. I'm currently "pivoting" my...

Oi galera - Wishing to retire to S. America (& soon)

Conselho bom, muito obrigado Kaapstad, very nice, hoping to get there some day before the WC goes Afrikaans on us! In my second sabbatical, I used a portion of my non-ret. funds for initially a 6 mo. trip to S. Am to scout out the sights. That morphed into an educational trip of ~2 years...

Oi galera - Wishing to retire to S. America (& soon)

Bailing early I've got about 300K miles saved in a FF plan so I'm ok short term travel-wise. The healthcare issue is a bit murkier, the biggest variable and on my to-do list for the year. No sense in making this long, drawn-out plan for the next 50 years if the doc says 30-35 is more likely.

Oi galera - Wishing to retire to S. America (& soon)

A word of thanks to my good friend Ed who pointed me to this website. And now the gory details, via the Maldini template (or something close enough, anyway): Present Location: Pacific NorthWest Family: SWM, late 30's, reasonably decent health. All 4 grandparents lived into 80's, two of...
