    Dental Insurance

OK, how many of you have dental insurance? I'm considering a PPO, which allows me to go to more than the normal turnstile dental offices and get the same dentist for the long term...but the maximum benefit is essentialy $4,000 for a year for two of us, vs. premiums of about $1,800. Not the...

    anybody else super conservative?

There is certainly political risk to equities, where high taxes, deficits, or other poor policies could hamper profits, affect company liquidity, or basically destroy the economy and businesses. Unfortunately those same risks apply to debt securities, real estate, cash (value of money), and...

    Talking to 'regular folks'

My reply in each case is just "I'm retired." If someone has sincere questions about, gee, what do you do all day, I answer honestly. If someone asks and looks down their nose at me, I really don't care.

Oh no! JPMorgan 4% rule fears

This piece is hot garbage on so many levels. First of all, the extreme example....someone with $30 million, spending $1.2 million. If they noticed in 10 years that their portfolio was dwindling, they could make the immense sacrifice quite easily to drop that burn rate to $600k a year...

    COVID habits you've kept

Nothing. The level of risk is no different than it was before COVID, so I feel no need to keep ANY of the various things were forced to do, let alone the most silly ones like masking. (Can you tell I was annoyed by what I see as vastly overdone covid measures haha....YMMV)

    Forgive debt or not?

I second everyone's suggestion to forgive it. Be the better person, and she's the mother of your son. Though I'd make it clear that you're not in a position to lend money again.

    Depressing Thoughts about Retirement

I think what you plan to do in retirement needs to be baked into your retirement cost estimate and how that converges with your savings estimate and FIRE reaching estimate. Then it becomes a matter of tradeoffs....you then decide if working a few extra years to allow you to travel more or more...

RE 2 Year Update - Same problems when retired, but better still to retire

I think what really turned me off is realizing that I"m an introvert...and having to deal with a bunch of new people each semester would be not fun. Are you an extrovert?

RE 2 Year Update - Same problems when retired, but better still to retire

Yep that all makes sense. Yeah for me, the teaching thing sounded good when it was a few years down the road when planning, but then when it was imminent...I realized...geez I have to work, deal with a bunch of people...and I'm an introvert so that's not fun, so that one fell out. Yeah and I...

Favorite Books/Websites About Life After Retirement

Yes that makes sense! I’ve been retired a couple years thus far, and have found plenty to do. Life not perfect or magical…working life wasn’t either. But wouldn’t trade best day working for worst day retiring for a second. Read one book on subject (can’t remember which one), but seemed rather...

    Introvert Extrovert

I'm an introvert....definite get weaker and tired when I have to interact with people, strengthened when I'm alone. Hasn't really kept me from anything important.

What percent of net worth is ideal for home?

Not sure whether this is "ideal" but for us it's about 15% of our net worth. We live in a totally overpriced area of California.

RE 2 Year Update - Same problems when retired, but better still to retire

OK, I RE'd now about two years ago, in April 2021. I'm 57 now, wife is 58. Here's my update! What I suspected is true...that my basic makeup/mentality did not change, that the same basic struggles and downers while working, are STILL struggles and downers in retirement, just different...

    Restaurant Dining

Yep, very true. And many many more have been out of work, out of school, and otherwise negatively impacted for even longer periods of time not because of illness, but due to shutdowns that may not be medically and economically justified. A shame all around.
