$500,000 per couple primary residence exclusion and inflation

We were in the same home for 33 years. Built it, raised kids there and loved it. But, the maintenance became a problem. We sold it last year and just missed the peak of the seller’s market for Florida waterfront homes. We exceeded the $500,000. We kept almost every receipt for capital type...

Getting depressed about illnesses and deaths

This hits home. Until I was almost 73, I wasn’t on any meds and was super active. I had a weird bp issue and they put me on bp meds. Everything has gone to hell since. I just turned 74. I’ve seen more doctors this past year than in the rest of my life. I can’t exercise like I always have...

    Broke down

Ronin, I got on the bike for a short ride today. I’d done some riding on a smart trainer but not much. It felt great but even modest hills felt like killers. I lost a lot of strength and stamina. But, the hip felt great. Just keep working at it slowly and see how it goes.

    Broke down

Ronin, I fractured my acetabulum 14 years ago. The head of my femur was also damaged and had an area of avn. 2 plates and 9 screws put it back together. I was in a wheelchair for 8 weeks. They couldn’t do a hip replacement then because of the damage to the socket. I was back on the bike at...

Do you carry around your own test results for new docs?

I try to get the test results and scan them into my computer. It makes it easy to compare year to year and to help new doctors.

    Purchasing New Car

We bought a Hyundai 5 years ago. I negotiated a price first and then told them I would pay cash. The sales guy said he had to let the finance guy talk to us. I blew him off but then he said Hyundai would give me a $6,000 incentive to lease. I asked to see the lease and it had no prepayment...

When do people give up on wearing contact lenses?

I'm 73. Started wearing hard contacts at age 14. Due to an eye injury, I had an implant lens in one eye about 35 years ago and then the other eye a few years later. They didn't get it perfect and I still need some correction. I still wear the gas permeable contacts but not all the time. If...

water heater failed .. need a new one ... tankless?

I have a 13 year old tankless gas unit in a 2d home. I love it. I flush it once a year to clean out deposits. Works like a charm. If my primary home had gas, I would install one here. Go for it!

When do you withdrawal from your portfolio?

My rmd goes almost 100% to faith based charities. On the other assets, when we need money, we withdraw it. Its less than 4% most years, but if its more than 4%, who cares? I'm 72, been retired 10 years and there's no way we run out of money unless the government confiscates every thing. Just...

We're paying less than half a percent of our holdings in fees. Your fees are pretty high.

Better Stocks Than Bonds in Retirement

After almost 10 years of retirement, I'm comfortable with a higher percent of equities. Years ago, I tried to build a portfolio on tax free mini bonds that were paying 5% or a little more. I calculated that a 4% tax free return was more than enough to support us well in retirement. And that...

Can we have a discussion on security cameras?

Wal-Mart sells a "geeni" WiFi camera for about $30. I ordered 2 more of them for about $55 for the pair. The app is simple, it has sound, motion alerts, 1080 video. Its cheap and simple.

    Jumped Off the Cliff Today

Congrats. I retired at 63 too and while that isn't as early as some, it is much earlier than most. 9 years later, its still fantastic. I don't have any pensions, not does my wife, but we have adequate savings to maintain a comfortable life style with two homes and we've been to Europe twice...

    Do you schedule your days?

A lack of schedule is wonderful. Even so, my wife and I have developed a routine in our 9 years of retirement. We both read the Bible almost every morning. We exercise almost every days walking, gym time, etc. 3 days or occasionally 4, I ride my bike for 30-35 miles. We nap most days and...

For those who have successful children

When my first child was born 41 years ago, I asked this question of an older friend who had great kids. His answer was "wrestle with them on the floor and tell them you love them". I have 3 successful, well adjusted, reasonably happy kids. We took them to church. We modeled good behavior and...

    Lumbar sclerosis/DDD Experiences?

Back issues suck! I've had it for years. I had one surgery 8 or 9 years ago for a really badly herniated disk. These days, I wake up with a stiff lower back. I use a heating pad for 30 minutes. I stretch. I ride a bike or walk every day. The bike is great. Walking is uncomfortable for...

Letting Yourself Go Later In Life - Ramifications?

Its a personal choice and maybe partly a genetic issue. I'm 71 and some. Have been retired for 9 years. Right now, I weigh about 12-15 pounds less than I did when I retired. 6'2'', 180 lbs. I exercise every day, despite having disk issues at every level in my back. I walk 2.5-3 miles 3 days...

Did You Move Where You Did Not Know Anyone?

We moved part time to NC from FL in 2013. 6 months there and 6 months in FL. For me, the move was a great way to separate from an almost 40 year career in the same place. We immediately found better friends, different hobbies, a new church family and more community. For me, the key was...

    Sibling "Buy-out" in Probate

OP. No will? In most states, you and your sibling each own a half interest in the house. It should be valued as of the date of your mother's death. If its worth $100,000, you own half. You could force a judicial sale, but the easiest thing would be for the brother to buy you out for...

Is "early retirement" insensitive right now?

Someone will become a victim somehow. Book it. I still have a few life long friends who seem mildly offended that I'm not working anymore and they are. From my perspective, I'm sad they feel that way but in the other hand I've enjoyed myself more than I have in memory. I can do useful things...

    Good Things about Being Retired

It's been 8 years since I pulled the plug. Most of my then peers are still working. They have bills to pay, they're just not ready, they wonder what they would do all day, etc, etc. Don't you get bored, they ask? I was 63 then and most of my peers are now 70 or above. Most of them should...

    SWR failures from history

Theory is great, experience is better. I ran all the FIRE Calcs and other stuff before retiring at 63, which isn't all that early. We have 2 homes and paid off the mortgage before retiring. We juggled stuff so I could wait to take SS at 70 and my net after they take out Medicare is over $3500...

    New Truck-negotiation- cash back incentive

Yes, that's what it was. As you probably know, the leases are basically a financing scheme where you are financing the difference between the negotiated purchase price and the pre-determined residual value at the end of the lease term. I don't think the residual value is negotiable but the...
