Home prices getting interesting, what price are homes in your neighborhood?

Whaaaaat? Purchased our retirement home in 2007 for $280k, in a neighborhood of similarly sized and priced homes in an Eastern Idaho town of about 80k population. Current market value is over $600k, and average price for the neighborhood is mid $600k range with a few up into the low $1M range...

    Closed out my LinkedIn account

I closed my LinkedIn account several years BEFORE I retired. I was so sick and tired of people who visited my office as sales/business reps for companies I had never worked with sending me "link" requests within hours of leaving my presence. Why would I willingly attach my name and reputation...

    First management position, any advice?

I was in IT for more than 25 years, the last 15 in management at increasingly higher levels, retiring as director of IT engineering for a huge healthcare company. My best advice is “never stop learning”. Learn from your staff, learn from your superiors, and continuously educate yourself. Learn...

Stimulus-Will you save or spend it?

If you don’t need it, give it to a charity Since I am retired and my “wages” aren’t affected by the closing of businesses or staying at home, I feel it is my responsibility to give any “stimulus” check I might receive to a charitable organization that is helping those that have been negatively...

    When to buyback?

A fools errand If you sold all equities due to fear of a crash, you deserve the pain of sitting on the sidelines wondering when to “ get back in”, and the lost bounce you’ll miss as you procrastinate. Market timing, which is exactly what this is, is a fools errand.

    Have you polished your shoes?

Polish them yourself - save the cash I always polished my own shoes. From grammar school through the later years of my working career, right up until I went all "Tommy Bahama" and never wore polished shoes or neck ties to work again. I am retired now, but I still have two pair of polished...

What do you do all day after ER

Today I started on the "re-invigorate the lawns" spring project. It actually started several days ago, when I got all of my power equipment in order for the season, with oil changes, repairs, cleaning and sharpening, etc. This morning at 9am (as early as I felt comfortable about firing up the...

Owe Back taxes? No passport !

Why does the amount you have defaulted on make a difference? If you have unpaid taxes, you should lose your passport, and have your wages attached unless an alternative repayment plan has been established with and approved by the IRS. Cheating on or evading taxes is ILLEGAL.

    Unit Investment Trusts and EJ

I had to check the location of the OP to see if it was the same EJ scumbag that my MIL is hooked up with. I have never seen more blatant abuse of the "advisor" relationship that some of the crap EJ foists on unsuspecting folks who don't know any better.

What did you do today? 2016 version

Digging it Today I dug up 6 feet of my decomposed granite garden path, and emptied one end of a raised bed, so I could cut off and remove an invading tree root that had lifted the path and raised one corner of a raised bed. All in all, I removed over ten feet of root, which ranged from 4"...

Getting close - switch to saving cash?

In the last year before retirement, we built up our savings/checking cash to enough to live on for a couple of years. It was very handy to not have to take any kind of withdrawals from investments for over two years after retiring (lasted about 30 months), as we adjusted to retired life and got...

    Combining rollover IRAs?

Combining Rollover IRA's GreyDog, It is a good idea to merge the rollover IRA's, now that the need for separation by state and state taxation of ex-residents is off the table. But, be sure that the only moneys you merge are all "pure" 401k/403b/457, or whatever other qualified ERISA savings...

    What We're Making

You'd be surprised at some of the recycled materials I have used. Everything from 50 caliber machine gun brass cartridges to copper plates from old transformers, to sink and toilet plumbing. ;)

    What We're Making

$120 would be semi-affordable, but the retail prices are much more than that! I haven't done any enameling yet. No, I never make the same thing twice, so online sales would be a nightmare. And thank you to everyone for the nice comments. If you ever find yourself in Idaho Falls, ID, stop...

    What We're Making

I have been making jewelry (primarily earrings) from recycled metals for the last year or so. It started innocently when I was about to toss some scrap copper into a metal scrap bucket in my shop, and instead put it on the workbench and started cutting, hammering, filing, and ended up with a...
