    $2 billion loss - tighter regulation ?

Since JP Morgan's hedge operations have been referred to as betting; they need to become better card counters. Most any investment decision contains an element of risk that could be referred to as betting. Disclosure- I've been long JPM and it's predecessors for the better part of 40 years.

Poll: How Many Credit/Debit Cards in the Wallet/Purse?

Years back I had a store credit card with Wallachs. I ordered 3 Silver Trumpeter suits for about $1,400. When I came in to pick up the altered suits, they had the suits ready but told me my credit card was no good. I told them they could keep the suits. Five or six years later Wallachs got...

Poll: How Many Credit/Debit Cards in the Wallet/Purse?

No room in my wallet for all of my credit cards. Keep them in a brick held together by an Andy Boy broccoli rubber band. We have a couple of debit cards but neither carry nor use them.

    Don't Carry SS Card. Medicare?

I lost my SS card 40years ago, never replaced it and began receiving my SS monthly retirement benefit 16 months ago. Scanning one's Medicare card into their computer might be a good idea.

    Happy Mother's Day

Happy Hallmark cards day. Why are Snap On tools appropriate for Fathers' Day and a $900+ vacuum cleaner not appropriate for Mothers' Day?

    This weather is awful!! 2008-2021

Great weather (under 70* F) & no sweat on cool beer bottles (or me). Cool enough to bake without going to the outdoor kitchen.

    The Clash of Generations

Interesting how things change. What used to be termed a contribution (Federal Insurance Contribution Act- FICA) is now commonly referred to as a tax. What kind of earnings have been realized on these contributions?

    Doing it on Dividends Alone?

At current market prices it seems unlikely to be able to build a diversified $2 million portfolio of well capitalized equities that provides pretax dividend income of more than $60,000. The equities in our portfolio have been held for a cost weighted average of 5.0 years (a range of 1 day to...

How to Find No-Hassle Quiet Neighborhood

Somewhat assured no hassle and quiet requires a minimum of 10 acres on high ground and a Dodge Power Wagon. Sixty years ago such property could be had near Harrisburg for less than $100 per acre:(.

Poll: Do You Use A Financial Advisor? Definitions in post #1.

I've been retired for 17 years, have a current income that is about 2X my final annual salary, and doubt I would be any better off if I'd relied on the advice of a CFA .

How did the people you know in high school turn out?

The one I see most regularly is a retired grade school teacher collecting a $69K pension. When we go to a restaurant he either asks for separate checks or goes through the bill with a fine tooth comb to calculate his share.

    Older folks and s.e.x.

Under the advice of her physician, my wife was on Premarin for about 10 years. It spared her some of the symptoms of the change of life, but I was concerned about the increased incidence of problems like breast cancer. After 10 years, she discontinued the Premarin. Within 1 year of her...

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

Please let us know what you settle on. You're lucky to have a bride that still enjoys that 'outdoorsy' stuff. I often reflect on the 3 week camper trip from San Francisco to Vancouver that I enjoyed with my wife and inlaws

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

After making do with a 12" hacksaw for 20 years, I finally broke down and ordered a 16" stainless steel butcher saw with two extra 8tpi blades. As usual, I got an earful from my wife. Wish I had room for the 22" model.

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

Verified that the Fed and State bloodsuckers received my 2011 tax returns, assisted my wife in the prep of our dinner, cooked enough ice cream mix for 6 pints of ice cream, calculated the weekly loss, and 10 year annualized gain on our actively managed portfolio.
