I don't feel completely retired yet: My spouse has been implored to continue working through January. Anyone else have this feeling of being "on hold" after retirement due to a spouse's plans to retire just a short period of time later?

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

"Equally horrible" makes it sound like you're choosing between two forms of execution. Both options offer you entertainment - i.e., something you enjoy. So they are "equally good". They may not be as good as you want, but this wholesale distortion of reality, seeing good as "horrible" because it...

Switching from Android to iPad - What should I know?

Thanks. After a bit more research I've gone ahead and bought the Galaxy Tab A. The screen is a bit smaller than my old tablet but that's actually better overall. I can palm this tablet whereas my old tablet required two hands.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

I think that's actually the problem: Advocates for streaming are often those who have marginalized in their own minds the downside and therefore cannot acknowledge the downside when it is expressed. Instead, they presume the other poster needs instruction or correction rather than to have their...

Switching from Android to iPad - What should I know?

Hmmm... this sounds alternatively distressing ("use it for a few years") and encouraging ("get an inexpensive one"). Having said that, this thread has made clear that I skimmed past the Galaxy Tab too quickly, especially in light of Ian S's warning, above. The more I read about the device...

Switching from Android to iPad - What should I know?

Just to be clear, I have Android phones that I'm very happy with, and the available apps are great, especially the ones I rely on most. Cross-compatibility with those apps that run in Chrome on Windows PCs is an unequivocal requirement for me. That was my main concern and much of what I'm...

Switching from Android to iPad - What should I know?

We are considering our next tablet purchase. I've been using a Google Pixel C. Less that three years in (four years really - it was a refurb), the screen has failed. (The bottom half dances back and forth continuously.) This tablet has been disappointing from the start. It locked up regularly...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

However, invariably, the total expenditure for video entertainment will be roughly the same, overall, adjusted for inflation. I think I paid a total of $18/month to cover my communications needs back in the early 1980s. I'm paying roughly the same now to cover my communications needs, overall...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

This was inevitable, and basically what I've been saying would happen (in some form) since joining this thread years ago. However, it should be noted that what timo2 has decided to "wait out" is probably the last two years there will be any early adopter advantage whatsoever.

I'm still trying to pull our new home together. We've been here two weeks and I've unpacked the last box. Next I need to install hooks and holders in the garage, get the pictures on the walls, and install cabinet pulls. We have workers coming to install gutters, and install the lighting and fans...

    Class of 2019

So I've been retired for two months now but it sure doesn't feel like it. I've been busy busy busy making arrangements for our move to Florida, selling/donating/discarding half our "stuff", and packing the rest. We have another few weeks before the move itself. Maybe I can take a few days off...

And something they've been doing irregularly for years. They did the same in many areas in 2018, and in 2014-2015.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

Those channels aren't "offbeat" - they're channels that serve the interests of other people. For those of us for whom the dominant cultural motifs resonate, the degradation of viewing options for others may not be noticeable, but for those others the impact is real.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

TiVo is a premium device that has been on top of the repack every step of the way, so that's almost surely not the issue. I'd bet that some channels failed to properly change their meta-data.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

We're already seeing streaming trending back to cable bundles. If these companies have to, perhaps they'll offer a la carte for a penny less than the corresponding bundle. That'll underscore why this should "get crushed". If people want a la carte, then they should vote for legislators that...

    Refrigerator upgrade

We've had our Samsung repaired a half dozen times over 4 3/4 years of our 5 year Geek Squad service plan. When the buyer of our home asked if the refrigerator could be included, we agreed. By contrast, we were a little less enthusiastic about including the Samsung Washer and Dryer, for which...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

I went over 1TB once even though I wasn't streaming at all. Turns out it was a bad Windows Update, that kept failing and restarting (on several computers). There can be loads of data going back and forth that have nothing to do with video entertainment.

    Refrigerator upgrade

We went down a similar path, though not quite that far. When we move our new refrigerator will not have a water/ice dispenser in the door. The problem is not making ice but rather making ice and delivering it through the door of a French door refrigerator (specifically). Though they've tried...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

Best bet is to buy lifetime service (it's called "All in" or something like that now). TiVos last far longer than the 3-4 year break-even period - generally, I've replaced TiVos due to technological advancements (like HD and MPEG-4 encoding) rather than mechanical issues. Up until last month I...
