when is the best time to tell your boss that you are retiring?

I gave my boss three weeks notice. However, each persons situation will be different and it's hard to give a one size fits all answer. I have never regretted giving three weeks notice, but I would not necessarily recommend it to anyone else as I would not know their situation in full.

I think I need to go back to w*rk

Yes, it was kind of scary not having a paycheck at first. After the first month when I saw that it would work, that lessoned my anxiety greatly of not having a paycheck and relying on my investments for income.

    Expat Corner (part 2)

It wasn't just about the money savings for me. I would be lying if I didn't admit that was a part of it. However, that was far from the only consideration on why I tried to make the move. When I pushed it, I was told the reason things didn't move faster or in my case didn't move at all, was...

    Expat Corner (part 2)

No, I made plans but they fell through. Partly because of covid and partly due to political reasons I think. It was just tough all the way around and I never could get any traction going so I gave it up. So I will be content and happy in the good ole USA .

The 10X rule to have enough to retire by age 55?

Just some thoughts. Assuming in all probability, this is in a taxable account , then this could possibly work for some people for a time. But then inflation will start to bite, and that is when those reinforcements like t-ira,roth and later SS needs to start coming online, otherwise things...

    Digital TV antenna

Two things. Number one, there is no such thing as a digital antenna. The TV antennas that were used pre digital TV will pick up the digital TV signals just fine. Second point is, if you feel you have to put the TV antenna in the attic, I think you would be better served by buying a 20 foot...

Will We Get A Santa Rally in 2022?

Ok. I accept that, but we will see what happens this year. My gut feeling says we are still in a bear market. Does being in a bear market determine whether a Sant Claus rally will happen? I have no idea.

    Don’t need social security

I have no idea when the best time for others or myself is to take Social Security. I have a simple philosophy for when to to take SS. When I turn 62, in 9 years, if I need it , I will take it. If not, I will evaluate it it each year past 62 and then decide.

Will We Get A Santa Rally in 2022?

I don't know. But as a measurement stick, by halfway through December, which we are rapidly approaching, if the bulls have not awakened yet, I think the Santa Claus rally unlikely.

Things you have learned on the forum

I think the biggest thing I have learned, although I have not seen it addressed on this forum, is the investing philosophy of capital preservation while trying to hit homeruns. Of course what exactly that means AA wise is the million dollar question. I first came upon this by reading quotes by...

Things you have learned on the forum

I have learned that numbers is hard. That if I am not polite and do not keep my posts civil, I cannot learn anything.

Things you have learned on the forum

I will go first. When I first joined this forum, I always ran my sentences together with no space in between. Of course, I have corrected this. Anyone else want to share? It could be anything at all you have learned. Investing or otherwise.

6 Uncomfortable retirement truths you need to know about.

I have learned to try to keep my posts short. The older I get the less I want to read a lot of paragraphs.

I saw Alabama twice in concert in the early 90's. They were in their prime back then or close to it.

With stock market crash, can you still retire?

I am familiar with a few on that list and hold a few. However, I limit the percentages for each of them to well less than 5% of my portfolio. I currently have PDI and RIV. I wish you the best of luck with your list.

    I have sinned. I sold

I am not asking for the stocks or the positions you held. What I am asking you is why you had 30% in investments that were volatile. IMO there isn't anything wrong with gambling, provided the amount is kept to 10%, preferably 5 % of assets or less. As to what you do now, well that is a tough...

    Discomfort/pain gum area near teeth

I think flossing is huge. I use Glide floss picks and it makes it so easy. I suspect it solves so many problems for gums and teeth if done on a regular basis.

Consolidating Cash Assets to a Single Brokerage - Fidelity or Schwab?

I like Schwab. They are always helpful on the phone or online and I like their ATM card that reimburses fees that other ATM's charge you to get cash out.

Newly Retired & Survived First Bear Market

Exactly. I think we have come close to the 50% retracement. IOW, 4231 on the Sp500 using the high of 4797 on the sp500. Almost immediately after coming close to that 50% retracement, we started heading down again. So it is not clear what that means. IMO we cannot assume this downturn is over...

    Done with Bogleheads ... it's a cult

Joe Wras, It was years ago since I visited BH. I remember sifting through the topics I was interested in and it just seemed unimpressive to me. Now I suppose that is a bit unfair of me to say since I sometimes have a narrow range of interest and it isn't always investing and about money. But...

    Done with Bogleheads ... it's a cult

I have never posted anything on BH . One thing I must point out, is that the site didn't seem as active as here. As to BH itself, there is some good information there, but , well I don't know, it just seemed like it was all business and no room for anything else.

Dividend Yield vs Total Return Income in Retirement

What I do for income is I have some bond funds . Every single dollar I do not need for income I put in the SP500 for growth. As for the topic, I do not know the answer to it, but I do enjoy reading the comments from other posters.

After you FIRED and retired, were there expenses you immediately cut or stopped?

First thing I did was get rid of the landline. That's the one thing that stands out upon thinking about it. Of course I moved to a place with a lower cost of living as I could never retire in so cal.
