    What We're Making

Yes, the concrete and stone were sealed with a wet look masonry sealer, I think it was from Behr. My next job that I'm trying to pull off is a BBQ rollaway. I purchased a black rollaway toolbox from Harbor Freight. I'm going to paint the front with a stainless steel appliance paint. I will...

    What We're Making

Just finished up with outdoor kitchen. Poured concrete top, with powdered pigment added to simulate marble. Grill converted to natty gas. Stone tiles were from Lowe's. Some mistakes were made along the way, but was an interesting build. Will be making "crack burgers" tonight, new recipe tryout.

I have a see through blank strip about 1" wide above my tool bar that I'm not sure of its purpose.

    Help me see the Sequoias

Instead of flying into SFO, I highly recommend flying into SAC. I have spent too much precious time i lines at airlines, baggage and rental car counters in SFO. In SAC, we have been on the road, 35 minutes after deplaning at the gate. Also, in SFO, you are on the southern part of SF, and you...

That's funny, I had a drink to celebrate the Pirate win over the Phillies! Beat'em Bucs!

    Blow that Dough 2024

DW and I really enjoy "dining experiences" and enjoy them 3-4 times a year. It is definitely great to enjoy quality foods cooked to perfection. It also gives me ideas, for when I cook. As far as hamburgers, I eat them here at the house with our own beef, purchased annually from a farmer friend...

Why are older Americans drinking so much

Who really has enough knowledge or information to say what is healthy? There are a million+ diets and opinions about diets. Blue zone, keto, organic, vegetarian, no alcohol, low alcohol, excessive alcohol. Everything in moderation, including moderation. Unless one is my PCP, don't tell me how...

    About death and money

DW's grandmother bought a pre planned funeral back in the 80's and she passed in '99. The funeral was entirely paid for, but we got a 1099 for the amount of the funeral, which, in essence, was an annuity, and since we didn't buy it, it was considered income to us.

    Latest Inflation Numbers and Discussion

A three bedroom house apartment we sold in November last year, we rented at $800/month. It was vacant when we sold, he now gets $1200/month. It was a nice apartment, but I never thought it could rent that high! Oh well, the building made us wealthy at our rates.

My 86 yo BIL has 3 martinis every night; and he is still w*rking a 40 hour week making over $100,000/year!

Why are older Americans drinking so much

I might have left that out. As I was involved in coal mine management and a member of the mine rescue team/fire brigades, the only real time I imbibed was on my days off or on vacation. I never had alcohol on w*rkdays. All changed when I retired and was able to actually have time to stop and...

Why are older Americans drinking so much

DW and I have a couple of glasses of wine each night with dinner. Every once in a while we skip a night or two, so no dependency issues that we can notice. Don't go to bars, don't drink and drive, unless we go to the local wine making club meeting, where DW is the designated driver. To us, wine...

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

Drove 3 hours NW to Mentor OH with son and grand kids, little traffic. Awesome experience, but the sun confused the sensors in all three of our phones and 2 tablets. The geese all ran under nearby pine trees, I guess, to bed down. I can see why those born in the past that didn't know what was...

    First million is enough

While we were never big spenders while we were employed, we never went without. Air travel vacation every other year, but modest. In retirement , we wanted to maintain the same income level as when we w*rked, especially if we retired early. We had to pay ~$1850/month for healthcare for 9 years...

For her 3 bedroom house in a great suburb outside of the city of Pittsburgh is about $4000. I live 20 miles south and have a much bigger home and they run about $7,000.

    Interesting study by northwestern mutual

My kid DSister, while I managed her investments, is single, owns her own home in a great neighborhood, has been retired now for 2 years. Her annual expenses are ~$13,000! While she has been living off her money market so we can convert her 403b into a Roth, she has decided that she will accept...

What is the best way to pay estimated Federal Taxes in Retirement?

I hired the CPA in December after we closed on December 1st. The penalty was $66, so I'll chalk it up to an "educational expense". I don't remember seeing a form 2210, there was 75 pages altogether and I'm still going through them. I usually Turbo Tax my returns, but because of the sales, I...

Examples of current inflation - add yours!

I filled up the tank Tuesday with premium at $4.69, close to the Pittsburgh area, drove across state north of Philly and refilled, premium at $3.69. I make the trek often, and this station is consistently lower always.

What is the best way to pay estimated Federal Taxes in Retirement?

I'm trying to understand. At the end of the 2nd quarter, my estimated taxes paid matched my liabilities. Withholding covered my liabilities in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, we sold the rentals, incurring a liability, in which I made an estimated payment. How could I estimate a liability...
