    Race to 2024 - please join :)

Hello fellow 2024 FIRE-ees! I have been salivating for early retirement for almost a decade now. I am hoping to flip the switch at the end of this year unless I succumb to OMY. Anyway, how does this look: I will be 48 when I retire at the end of the year. DH retired at 61 right before Covid...

Can we FIRE in one year at age 39 & 57?

We hit another big net worth milestone today, and are still happily married! Hopefully my husband will retire this year. He keeps working and I don't think he even knows why. More than a decade ago, I did a retirement planning exercise through my 457 plan, and my FIRE/partial FIRE guesstimate...

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

My husband and I just hit another big net worth milestone, but I can't tell anyone I know, hubby is asleep, and the cats don't care. I know our net worth will dip beneath the milestone, but hitting it for the first time is so exciting! Now if I can just get my husband to retire this year and...

    Acid Reflux and Baking Soda

You could try an elimination diet to see if you are allergic to something specific that is causing acid reflux. I did an elimination diet and learned that I am allergic to caffeine (not coffee, not the acidity). I switched to decaf coffee years ago, and my reoccurring, daily acid reflux issues...

    DNA Testing and New Sibling?

Wow, that is a shocking response!

    Retiring in Santa Fe NM

I was going to suggest Austin too, though it is getting expensive and congested. It does not have the high crime rate that many Midwestern cities are dealing with. It seems like most metro areas in the US have fairly high crime compared to the Utopia we are all looking for :(

    Any Travel Plan for 2019?

So far I have been to Mérida and Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico and Palm Springs, CA. Looking forward to visiting Padre Island/Corpus Christi, TX this spring. Headed to Washington DC in September.

Can we FIRE in one year at age 39 & 57?

I am still hoping to partially retire sometime between next winter and April 1, 2022 (when my husband will be ~ 18 months from Medicare age). Unfortunately, the cost of COBRA where I work is now $22,000/year for the two of us as of 2019. That amount of money would more than cover all our living...

At what age did you retire? (retire=NO paycheck)

I am trying to get my husband to retire this year at age 60. I am 42 and will keep working for an amount of time yet to be determined.

One month from Tender the Resignation- Need Advice

I would definitely keep the COBRA PPO plan then. Many of the ACA HMO's have tiny networks and no out of network coverage.

Experience to share - Moved DM to Assisted Living

My mother started having all sorts of strange issues that doctors could not diagnose for 6 months...until she finally got in to see a neurologist. Unfortunately, he correctly diagnosed my mother with Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy. Just 2 months later, she could no longer physically take care...

    Healthcare cost..not what I expected..

The true cost of health insurance/healthcare for my large group, self insured employer is $19,500/year for a family in Kansas City. Crazy! I am working hard trying to talk my husband into retiring to Mexico. I don't think things are going to get better anytime soon with respect to health...

ACA -Vs- Temporary -Vs- Defined Benefit Plan

This information is very useful to me. My husband is 60 and I am 42, so there may never be a time when we will both be alive, retired, and safely on Medicare. He has had 3 skin cancer surgeries in the past year, so he has pre-existing conditions. The plan right now is for me to work at my full...

Stop email notifications, but keep Android app notifications?

I hope this the the right place for this question: I am trying to figure out how to disable the email notifications from this forum, but keep the Android app notifications on my phone. I only see a setting to turn on/off push notifications in my app, but I am not sure which notifications it is...

When you put 2019 as your retirement year, does Firecalc assume January 1st, 2019 ?

It is funny how 1 year does make a big difference in FireCalc.

When you put 2019 as your retirement year, does Firecalc assume January 1st, 2019 ?

Yes to which question? I have wondered the same thing as the OP.

ER! So much free time to travel! But how do you handle... cats?

How do you interview pet sitters? What do you do? What do you ask? I need to find a good, reliable, trustworthy pet sitter. One of my cats had to have all her teeth removed by age 7, and her weak stomach can only tolerate certain wet foods. I pretty much need a pet sitter to come once a day to...

    Emotional support animals in restaurants/stores

I am not a smoker or a dog owner, but I do wish airports had more pet relief and smoking areas after security. Heck, I wish there was a place to go outside for the rest of us stuck in a stuffy airport all day. My favorite airport: Palm Springs!

    Emotional support animals in restaurants/stores

I wonder what states have laws against having your pet impersonate a service animal? I know it is a crime in California. I wonder how they enforce it?

    Emotional support animals in restaurants/stores

I forgot to add, I think there needs to be more regulation of and licensing of ADA animals now that half the population is lying about their animals being service animals. It makes me angry, and is causing a backlash against people who really need and have service animals. I believe it is a...

    Emotional support animals in restaurants/stores

Miniature horses are also a recognized service animal by the ADA, but there are a few more assessment factors specific to miniature horses. These horses are only 24 to 34 inches tall at the shoulders, and weigh 70 to 100 lbs. They can easily be transported with a minivan. If someone brings a...

    Screaming Kids in Restaurants...

Oh yes, I hate it when parents think it is OK to change their child's diaper at the table in the restaurant. It is so disgusting! I have seen it twice in my life. If I could make myself vomit, I would have walked over to their table and vomited to let them know how I felt.

    Class of 2018

I would love to be in the class of 2018, but we can't figure out how to deal with the health insurance elephant in the room, so I am going to keep working. I am hoping my husband will retire at the end of this year though. He will be 60 later this year. So, I am no longer in the Class of 2018...

    Screaming Kids in Restaurants...

I work in a county courthouse, and we regularly have to shut our main office doors because of awful parents and kids yelling in the hallway, using their phones (calls, music, video games, movies) with the speaker turned up all the way, playing kick ball on the walls, kids "swimming" all over the...

    Switching ACA plan mid year?

What I would like is a health insurance plan similar to what I have through my current employer. I would like a health insurance plan that has a decent network outside of just one hospital system, and some out of network coverage. The only options in my metro area are non-PPO plans with tiny...
