    IPA Beer Fans

I admit, I'm not a big fan of IPA's due to the hoppy bitterness. But when I do drink one, its usually Whaler's Rise which is a very popular IPA made here in RI. Give me a good lager like Sam Adams any day...

    Your favorite 2022 Purchase?

I sold my motorcycle and replaced it with a 1999 BMW Z3 convertible. It's a blast! The wife and I love riding around coastal RI and Newport with the top down (in the warmer weather of course). One of my best purchases of all time....so far!

Nice Hotels as we get older?

We stay mostly at Hampton Inns and/or Courtyards or similar as they are always clean and have a decent breakfast. However, when in an especially scenic location, we will splurge and stay a couple of nights in very nice hotels to take the experience to another level. We learned long ago not to...

    The Healthful Aging Thread

Yeah, I pretty much don't like the idea of someone else's poop inside of me! I wonder if there is a way to change your gut biome significantly by changing your diet alone?

I haven't made a new friend since high school

I've been retired for about a year but have done similar activities as you for years. Join a golf league. I've been in a league for years and I'm far from being a good golfer. Great bunch of guys of all different abilities. I also belong to the YMCA. It's part of my daily routine and I mix...

    Retired this week at 58

Congratulations! I also retired 8/1/2020 at 60 years old after 35 years with a mega company. I could feel the stress just melt away. Similar financial numbers as you and no debt which is key. Health insurance is brutal for DW and I but we'll address that as we go along with possible...

    Class of 2020

Update: With the pandemic, I actually did not retire until 7 31/2020. So far it feels like a long weekend! Guess it will take a while to sink in. That's ok, I've got plenty of time!!

I cannot understand the TV dialogue

We thought it was just us! I just turned 60 and DW is 57 and we both have good hearing but we were having the same problem. Closed captioning is always on when we watch movies or other shows especially with accents. Outlander was very difficult to understand and I believe that was when we...

    Geico v Amica?

As a soon to be retired insurance agent (captive agent of a national company) of over 26 years, I've dealt with an competed with both companies and can say that both have top-notch claims service and very loyal followings. Sure, you may have an occasional glitch of a phone call or email not...

    Class of 2020

Update: My retirement has been delayed. Management asked me to delay my retirement date due to the pandemic which really isn't too bad as I'm basically working part time from home earning my full time pay. Pretty good gig! No definite date set yet but I would think I'll be done by the summer.

Retiring in a bear or Recession Market

Thanks for sharing this info! Lots of great "food for thought". That's what I love about this forum - the sharing of ideas and opinions to help us all better chart our own courses. Thanks again.

Retiring in a bear or Recession Market

That's encouraging for me to hear. I've been looking forward to retiring on 3/31/2020 for so long that I'm pretty much committed to that date. Fortunately, I've got a significant cash bucket so I will not need to sell stocks for 5-7 years at the earliest. However, with no pension and SS...

New Costco store just opened nearby, what items do u like to buy at Costco.

That's kinda my conclusion. DW and I went to our nearest Costco in ST none in RI - and we saw a lot of tempting, unhealthy food. I guess it's all about making smart choices if following a low carb diet. Prices didn't seem all that low to us and the wine prices were actually higher than what...

    Line in the sand

I'm also a recovering carboholic. Went on the keto diet the first of the year and was doing well up until the past couple of weeks when social obligations really torpedoed me. All it takes is several cheat meals within a week or two and my carb cravings are back with a vengeance. For me, I've...

    Line in the sand

I was just having a similar conversation with my 87 year old dad yesterday. One of my SIL's was telling him recently that he needs to slow down and not do so much. My parents still live in the house I grew up in - 2.5 acres, IG pool, 2000 square foot house - and he still maintains the property...

Coronavirus - Financial, Health and Other impacts II

I also self invest 100% and have stayed the course and sold nothing. Actually had a limit order for VYM execute last Monday at $89.98 to add to this position. OF course, in hindsight, I should have waited as its down significantly since then. No worries as this is in my long-term bucket and...

Congrats! I hope retirement is everything you hoped it would be. I'm right behind you with a countdown date of 3/31/2020. Can't wait!!

    Class of 2020

I will also be joining the class of 2020 on March 31, 2020. A little earlier than planned but my work situation is not great and it makes sense financially (not to mention for stress reduction) to pull the plug at that time. Looking forward to the next chapter!!

What have you read recently? 2009 -2020

Currently reading "Younger Next Year" by Chris Crowley. An amusing read with some sound advise albeit nothing new. Basically, keep moving, don't eat junk, and continue to be social in retirement.
