Well, actually not. Ad blocker disabled, blank column is still there.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Below the 'latest posts' list there is a blank column that takes up maybe 30% of my page width. Is there any way to remove it?

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

I'm seeing a semi-transparent strip running along the bottom of the screen. Is there a purpose to it that I don't understand?

And in my wife's recent experience, if the doctor writes an order, it's covered, no questions.

Borrowing Against Investment Portfolio For Home Purchase

I used the Schwab Pledged Asset Line (PAL) as part of bridging finance when we downsized. It worked out OK, apart from (a) held the PAL for longer than I expected, and (b) interest rates started going up in the second half of 2022. In retrospect, bad timing. But all good now.

    Global Entry - Zoom interview

Are they still doing that? The GE booths at SFO, at least, don't have fingerprint readers any more. It's all facial recognition as far as I can see.

Do You Have a Mini PC? Looking for Feedback...

I have two Beelink SER5 boxes. One of them is now my main desktop PC, used mainly for web browsing, email, streaming, etc. I've also done some photo editing using Lightroom 6.14, and it was plenty snappy. So far it's always run cool to the touch, although I haven't tried to do any really...

    Global Entry - Zoom interview

After waiting nearly a year, my GE application was conditionally approved last Saturday. To my surprise, I was offered either a Zoom or an in-person interview. Scheduled for yesterday at 5:30 pm, took less than 5 minutes, and I'm now fully approved. I had to read out my passport and drivers...

    Neptune Society?

I used them 25 years ago when my first wife died. They arranged everything. All went well.

    Space - The Final Frontier

And both Voyagers use traveling wave tubes in their microwave transmitters. Yes, vacuum tubes, still working after 47+ years.

    So what am I missing?

If the portfolio has appreciated, then you will have to pay capital gains tax. I was in this situation, and it seemed that the PAL was a better bet.

Uh Oh! TT What are you doing to me?

That's strange, I have both open and on my screen at the same time.

Anyone here get a UK Pension?

Same here. It goes under 'other income'. I've heard of people producing synthetic 1099s, but I can't see the point in doing that.

    AFIB is a Progressive Disease

Following this thread. Thanks for starting it. I've had several episodes of Afib over the years, most recently resulting in an ER visit and an admission. My cardiologist is keen to do an ablation, claiming that recent advances in technique have made it a very successful procedure. That linked...

Automatic brokerage sell and $ transfer

I don't think this is possible with Schwab. At least, that's what my rep says. My solution is to keep a balance at Ally and do the monthly transfer from there. As stated by SecondCor, Vanguard can do it. I'm pretty sure Fidelity can as well. Does your niece have to use Schwab?

AARP article on the future of Traditional Medicare

Not sure I understand this. My wife enrolled in Traditional Medicare plus supplement this past May. Most of her doctors are part of Sutter/PAMF and there haven't been any problems with not accepting Medicare.

Those Who don't/didn't do Roth Conversions

This has been mentioned a few times, but it assumes (I think) that income remains the same, and tax brackets change to 'single' from 'married filing joint'. In our case, when I die, income from social security and two pensions will go away, so the problem could be reduced income rather than...

Do you take low dose aspirin?

Me too, although Eliquis in my case. Not supposed to take any NSAID. Too bad, since ibuprofen was my go-to drug for back pain.

    RSV vaccine side effects?

Returned from a trip to Thailand last December. After a couple of days, I started to feed lousy. Tested for Covid several times, all negative. Also negative for Flu. It finally turned out to be RSV. Lasted a few days, no lasting side effects, fortunately. I thought it was only something...

Federal income tax payment via wire transfer

Ah yes, thanks, that does make sense. The payment I'm dealing with isn't estimated, it's just the final return payment. Possibly that would be suffix 5, for a code of 10405. It would be nice to get official confirmation of that, though. And in case anyone is wondering, the IRS has generously...

Federal income tax payment via wire transfer

That's probably what I'll end up doing. My only issue is having to make several transfers from my brokerage account to get around the daily limit.

Federal income tax payment via wire transfer

Thanks, but that list doesn't show payment for an individual income tax return.
