    It's Wednesday weigh ins! 2007-2022

I have been stuck around 195 for a few weeks. I started at 231 and a bmi of 30.5 in August of last year. With an exercise program of almost entirely walking, I've gotten the bmi down to 26. This is still in the overweight category, but I am definitely healthier. Getting below 25 is really tough.

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

The one big difference on top of it all is FUEL. We don't buy the stuff and charge at home with the sun. Our solar production has offset car charging completely. The other game changer is how service works. My last rotation and filter change was done in the driveway by Tesla. If I were...

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

Look at the new Volkswagen ID4. Similar size, layout, and range, single motor front wheel drive (I think), but around $10-20k less with a base in the $40k range.

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

The average maintenance cost of $0 was taken from consumer reports. Yes, wiper blades and tires cost money, but they determined that in most years you pay nothing to maintain a leaf. This has been our experience as well. There is no oil, fuel system, belts, transmission, radiator, or fluids to...

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

Bizarre. I can't say we miss the smell of fuel or exhaust. We finally went all-in and replaced the car the teens drive with a used LEAF. We now have 3 EVs with different ranges of around 50, 150, and 300 miles. Most of my driving is around town and I use the 2011 LEAF with only about 50...

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

For what its worth, DW and I have never needed to pull a trailer during our 20+ years of marriage. I hear from my brother that he will only drive an SUV/truck for its capacity to "haul stuff", but he never does. I am sure many people need trucks and trailers, but for many more they just like...

Calculating income for Affordable Care Act

I retired early last year, and have been trying to determine how income is calculated when purchasing an ACA plan. I no longer get any W2 statements, but collect from an inherited IRA for the bulk of our expenses. DW is working, but maximizing retirement contributions to the full 26,000 max...

What We’re Smoking (or Grilling, or Curing)!

Just seeing this thread for the first time. I probably grill or smoke a couple times a week minimum year round. Pretty basic Weber kettle set-up, but we have the rotisserie add-on for smoked chicken dinners. Last week did 2 full racks of St. Louis ribs smoked with hickory, and grilled chicken...

Let's talk Self Driving Cars again!

My apologies. I was replying to Music Lovers comment about ZEVs being a fallacy. For us, the switch to EVs was simultaneous with the installation of our solar system which uses an inverter that is also a car charger (DC-DC direct charging when sun is shining). We are also in a mostly nuclear...

Let's talk Self Driving Cars again!

I disagree. Given that our solar photovoltaic system overproduces energy relative to our home car charging (almost 100% of our charging) I believe I can claim that our cars are solar powered. After an "offset" period, to cover production emissions, we get to point where we are emission free. On...

    Travel hopes 2021

Our first post Covid trip will be in August to Hawaii. Our son was accepted to the University, and we will get our first look at Honolulu dropping him off at the dorms. After a year of being cooped up, its just what the doctor ordered.

    It's Wednesday weigh ins! 2007-2022

I'm down to between 194-196 from 231 at retirement 9 months ago. Its all walking the dog, with a daily route of about 5 miles, and replacing short trips to the post office or pharmacy with walks. My DW is talking about a gym membership this summer, although I have not done that type of thing...

    Class of 2020

Congratulations. At 9 months in I have no regrets, and feel healthier than I have in years. No two-plus hour commute or j*b has given me time to get some exercise everyday and I'm down around 35 pounds since retiring. I have a nice garden and a pandemic puppy keeping me busy and have finally...

    India

I went to Delhi/Guragon for w*rk about 8 years ago. Unfortunately the trip was for 1 week, which was a bit short for such long flights, but it was for a conference and we were able to see sights like the red fort around Delhi and had a day trip to Agra to see the Taj. We stayed at the Leela...

Sam's club and Costco worth it for retirees.

I am uncertain about whether our $120 Costco membership is worth it or not. Our regular purchase items are laundry and dishwashing soaps, paper products like Kleenex, TP, and Paper Towels. Unfortunately, the business model is one that draws me in to get Kleenex and shows me a big screen TV that...

    It's Wednesday weigh ins! 2007-2022

206 This morning. I was trying to walk everyday until the recent cold snap, and have been substituting NA beer for my typical craft beer. Altogether I am down about 25# since August.

    Your recent repair? 2013 - 2020

I just replaced a pin spring on DD's Bari Sax, which is a loaner from her high school. Since I had to sign for a 10k replacement cost, I got permission to perform the repair. Using a spring pliers, I removed the old broken one and was lucky to find a replacement in my kit. Her Octave key is now...

What did you do today? - 2020 version

I finished the top on our cold frame. We built it years ago with recycled windows, but kept breaking panes. This year I bought a 3×6' sheet of clear plexiglass/acrylic (fits fine in the back of a Model 3) and built a frame out of scrap wood laying around. Had to borrow a bit to put screws...

What did you do today? - 2020 version

We got the last of our replacement windows installed today. The initial install had a hitch when the last window turned out to be 2" too big for the opening. I couldn't blame them, as it was mislabeled with the right measure. Our house is now as tight as a drum. Time to take the dog for a walk.

    Anyone else a Tesla investor?

I bought 7 shares pre-split, and am up 50%. I will watch prices when it joins the S&P, but am not expecting a major surge. If I find my initial investment value doubles, I will probably take the profit and invest that in something new, but we will have to see.

What did you do today? - 2020 version

I tracked down the webbing that failed on an old rocking chair in our house. It was (5) 18-inch strips of something called Pirelli Webbing, and I replaced these under the seat of our old rocker. From the labelling on the old stuff, it looks like the chair might be Danish. it can be sat upon...

    Do I miss working?

I'm about 2 months in, and don't miss it a bit. I am thrilled to be at home, skip the commute and take the dog for a walk.

What "old" series are you watching?

We have been watching the original star trek lately, and for a while were streaming The Saint, with a very young roger moore. I also tried re watching some of the original Doby Gillis series, but it was a bit less entertaining. We are still limited to whats available on netflix and prime. No...
