    What We're Making

Nice knife Ron, and nicely photographed on that weathered wood. Are those brass pins in the handle? I haven’t worked with brass yet, but interested in learning. Edit: Sorry for the double post, this forum had problems accepting my reply.

Great job on that vise Ron, I’m sure you will put it to good use. I want to let you and the other woodworkers here know about a good website, https://craftisian.com/ You and I are both members at Lumberjocks, but since it was sold last year it’s not as user friendly and doesn’t seem to have as...

    What We're Making

Thanks, there was actually a knot hole in the center that was just small enough for a clean opening for the tissue box, thus creating the swirl. I could never find a suitable use for this piece of wood before this project.

    What We're Making

Tissue Box It seems that cardboard tissue boxes are getting uglier all the time, so I decided to make a nicer one from wood. The sides are Walnut with Maple inlay. The attached top is an off cut from a previous project of figured Walnut that was too nice to discard, with Wenge trim. The...

    March Madness

I just watched that game, amazing! I love how much fun these guys are having. Now that my Tarheels are out of the race, I’m rooting for NC State all the way. I grew up in Raleigh, and my last year there as a teenager I was a bartender at Daryl’s, very close to campus. Fun times!

    March Madness

Carolina ran into a buzz saw to start their game against Michigan State. Their shots weren’t falling and MS was making everything, looking more like their pre season #1 ranking. Down by 12 points early, they didn’t panic and started playing great defense. It was an impressive turnaround, and...

    March Madness

Yeah, hats off to NC State for winning over my Heels. They deserved it, playing smothering defense and hitting a lot of big shots. But after coming home from a round of golf today it’s great to see Carolina with a number one seed. Maybe the loss will make them that much more focused. They have...

    March Madness

Harllee, I just noticed that you live in Chapel Hill, aka Blue Heaven. No wonder you’re a Carolina fan. I agree with you on that non-call on the trip, I assume that the refs just didn’t see it. But in general I much prefer a game where they let them play without too many whistles. They could...

    March Madness

March Madness is always a blast when you have a team in the race. I have lived in California for many years after coming for photography school in my youth, but I still bleed Carolina blue. Big game today with Duke, one of the biggest rivalries in sports. They have the potential to go all the...

Nice box Ron. I use Osmo Polyx as my go-to finish but haven’t tried their top oil. Do you prefer the top oil?

    Anyone with multiple Melanomas?

Well said, I haven’t heard that. I guess when it comes to skin cancer you need something that’s mean and nasty to fight it.

    Anyone with multiple Melanomas?

This is a timely post. I saw my dermatologist 3 weeks ago, had a spot on my arm biopsied which showed a small melanoma. It was removed 2 days ago using a burn and scrape procedure which can be done in office. He also has me on a 28 day Fluorouracil treatment for my face. It’s a cream that is...

    The Photographers' Corner - 2021 to ?

Very nice Ron. Throughout my career as a photographer I began to realize that two traits define good photographers; an eye for composition, and most importantly the ability to see and understand light, whether supplied by nature or produced by the photographer (in the studio, for instance). You...

Poll: Who Do You Pick To Win Super Bowl 2024?

I’m not seeing much support for the Niners so I’ll fix that mistake;D I watched football my whole life and was a big Niner’s fan until the Kaepernick debacle and all the politics in the sport that followed. I started watching again this year since that seems to have subsided somewhat. Purdy has...

    What We're Making

I like making boxes and trays, often requested by my wife. I’ve used various techniques for the joinery such as lock miters, box joints, and hand cut dovetails, but I really like the clean look of mitered corners with no visible reinforcement showing. Here’s my latest version. For my fellow...

Nice video Ron. Gotta love those hand cut dovetails. It looks like you’re using the Katz-Moses dovetail guide and getting great results. In my journey of learning how to cut nice looking dovetails I also ended up using a guide in my process, although mine is made by David Baron (same concept)...

anyone pick up golf after avoiding it for years?

I feel your pain brother. My ex took my fishing gear out of spite, after wiping out my life savings. Golf was my escape and sanctuary during an incredibly stressful time. I had been wanting some new irons for a long time, and at one point I told myself that I may be broke, but I’m going to be...

anyone pick up golf after avoiding it for years?

I’ve been following this thread and decided to chime in. I’m turning 70 next month and have been playing golf since my 30’s. It’s a great sport which can be enjoyed by people of much different athletic abilities. There’s a lot of people with very little ability who still enjoy the game to be...

    Munis in taxable account

If you are comfortable buying individual muni bonds, they can make sense if you are in a high tax state. I’m in California with a 9.3% state tax, so I have set up a ladder of California munis exempt from both federal and state taxes. My 5 year ladder has an average yield over 4%, which in the...
