    International airfares outrageous now

We did last August PHL to Zurich, then AMS to PHL on AA. Booked at like $1,800 pp. Checked about 2 months before trip, flights went down to $1,100. Called AA and they quickly/easily gave me credit (in AA account for future - not to CC) for $700. Good luck.

Opinion: The moment I realized we’re saving too much for retirement

People only look at information that supports their initial position/desire. There's plenty of both "America save more" and "America save less" articles. You and me will only endorse "save more" Because we're right..... Everyone else ? Not my problem...

WSJ Article: Never Mind the 1%. Mini-Millionaires Are Where Wealth Is Growing Fastest

Great article - thanks for taking time to post. "National average" and "all Americans" statistics are misleading because half the population has zero net worth. This article seems more representative of this forum

Wife is clueless, admits clueless, but never going to change.

    Talking to 'regular folks'

Tell them you play pickleball. My father's generation asked "what do you do?" Mine doesn't. My kids generation cares even less in personal situations.

pension as part of net worth

Vanguard years ago had article suggesting using 10x of annual amount for a non-cola pension as a "proxy" for that asset for "total net worth" estimations. 25x seems too high given non cola pension and default risk.

What would happen if one ran out of $ later in life?

The combination of some common sense along with modest social safety nets (albeit spotty and complicated) means we'll be fine.....

    Barely Use Cell Phone

I use mine constantly as a PHONE. I CALL people when their name pops in my head. I CALL people back after they text me. I see too many retired people become reclusive home hobbits. Society is "talk averse". Life is about relationships. Talk helps build relationships..

Is the American Dollar really going away?

So I asked Chat GPT - it doesn't know the answer, so no one does...... The US dollar has been the dominant reserve currency for many decades and it continues to play a major role in international finance and trade. As a reserve currency, the US dollar is widely held by central banks...

How much should I spend on retirement house

Good point. I view house as place to sleep and get ready for next trip. However MANY people are "house worshipers" spending majority of their waking hours beautifying. So if you're a "house puppy" and you live in NOVA - maybe $700k, half your net worth, is worth it to you.

My son wants to me to help pay for his very expensive wedding? How much?

Never heard of groom's parents "matching" contribution. Tradition I've seen is groom's parents host rehearsal dinner. Like everyone said, the amounts are outrageous.

    Boomer Wealth

When / Will the baby boomers start selling off inflated assets ? (houses, cars, etc) Watched this land plot in town I grew up: First farm, then developed in 70's into Middle School to accommodate the boomers. Then there were excess school buildings after boomers, so it was sold. Then became...

Company medical insurance / Medicare with retired over 65 spouse

I'm 62, working, wife soon 65, retired. Megacorp has medical plan - I understand now employers have to offer coverage for over 65 spouses ? Still researching, but I think we want to: 1. Keep her on my insurance 2. Enroll her in just Medicare Part A What I'm trying to confirm: 1. Can I still...

Disillusioned with HOA and thinking of moving

HOA's are all very different. I'd bet over 55 communities, along with condos, townhouses, and "golf properties" are going to more restrictive than single family home neighborhoods. Our neighborhood restrictions are perfect for us - no permanently parked cars or boats or trailers, only split...

Is this a great house or what?

Great thread. Love LOOKING at interesting houses. Would HATE living in interesting house. Just spent 3 weeks out west camping / motorcycling with some guys. Mostly tents on BLM land, some cheap hotels. I loved the "minimalism". I'm amazed at the time/money/energy that people put into...

    Is EVERTHING desirable?

I think: Collectibles today are overpriced because Baby Boomers are buying up The next generation doesn't care about "stuff" When the Baby Boomers dump this junk, there'll be no one to buy (either don't want and/or can't afford it) Fortunately I'm becoming a "minimalist" and love getting rid...

Bradycardia and age- How low is too low?

Wow - lots good information and "low numbers". I'm regularly in high 50's RHR, max out exercising around 140, 60 years old. I do get lightheaded if I get up from couch quickly after long run. Never fallen over - but need to pause. Anybody get this ?

    Loosening purse strings before retiring?

I've always "spent freely" for my life priorities (kids, education, health, travel, experiences, charity, ice cream). I've always been "extremely frugal" for everything else I don't care about (materialistic cr*p, clothing, cars, home beautification, "keeping up with neighbors", etc). I don't...

    Complicated state taxes

Any good websites for "complicated state tax situations" ? Daughter and husband lived/worked in 2 different states for half year, then moved / started work in 3rd state together (residence forward). And I know, "accountant might be good idea". Thanks !

45th High School Reunion or No?

I went to my 40th, rekindled some new friendships, and still get together with some people for golf since. Every person is different. As I get older I am reaching out more to folks I knew in the past, not living in the past, but just trying to reconnect - sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't...

    Hesitant to pull the trigger

Surely you understand there's nothing financially stopping you from retiring now. Work: You either work: 60, 40, or 0 hours per week. I see a lot of posts like: "high paying job, high stress, hate it, it's killing me, have to work 60-80 hours per week". I would try "punching the clock" and...

Can I retire like this? (3.2 million net worth)

You don't have to "move" to get lower expenses - you already have. Quit you job and keep doing everything else if you like it Just a thought.

What is the Logic of a Pot Filler?

There is little "logic" - just something for materialistic spouses to covet and be jealous of others that have. I met a person one time who was miserable because their kitchen did not have two dishwashers - and her neighbor's all had them.
