Do you take low dose aspirin?

I've been taking a daily low-dose aspirin for 10+ years, and plan to continue. I am 68. I reviewed all of the studies related to aspirin before I started taking it, and decided the potential reward was greater than the risk. By the way, there are many studies supporting the use of daily low...

Controlling the unholy trinity (salt, sugar, saturated fat)

Industrial seed oils are man-made oils that are manufactured using a chemical/heat extraction process. They include: soybean oil, vegetable oil, corn oil, canola oil, and several others. Humans have never consumed man-made oils like this, in our evolutionary history. If you watch a video on...

Controlling the unholy trinity (salt, sugar, saturated fat)

Just to follow up on this, I am on ZERO prescription meds, and my health is great at age 69. Apparently consuming saturated fats has not done any harm to me. I avoid all of the man-made industrial seed oils, and have been doing so for many years. Good health to you..........

Controlling the unholy trinity (salt, sugar, saturated fat)

We'll have to agree to disagree, at least on most of this. I do agree with you about eating whole plant foods (and whole foods, in general). Ultra-processed foods are what is contributing to the increased in chronic diseases we see today (diabetes, heart disease, etc).......not saturated fat...

Controlling the unholy trinity (salt, sugar, saturated fat)

I agree with Ivansfan 100%. Humans have been consuming saturated fats throughout our evolutionary history, without problems. The fats to avoid are the industrially-concocted fats that come in a jug..........corn oil, soybean oil, vegetable oil, etc.. There is now a ton of research out there...

    Food Triggered Irregular Heart Rhythm?

Not sure if this will help, but here is my experience with PVC's. I started having them several years.........got BAD, couldn't sleep at night, as they kept waking me up. Spent a lot of time (and went to several doctors) trying to figure out the cause. None of them really helped. I finally...

    Offered a Package at 57

I would take the package, without hesitation. The 4-5 years you will have to wait, if you don't take it now, is time you can never get back. I retired with far less assets than you at age 55, and have zero regrets (I am 68 now).

    Pre-diabetic?

agreed. The Standard American Diet gives people chronic illnesses, like diabetes.

    Pre-diabetic?

That's irresponsible of your doctor. You need to have an A1C test done, asap. If it's over 6.0, you need to take some steps to get your blood glucose down, such as dietary changes.

    Pre-diabetic?

If I were you, I would replace the oatmeal breakfast with a higher-protein breakfast, that has fewer carbs. For example, scrambled eggs and some kind of meat/veggies leftover from the previous day's dinner. I'd probably also cut down on the bread consumption. Instead of sandwiches for lunch...

Do you take low dose aspirin?

Thanks for the link. This guy does have some really good information, not only on aspirin, but lots of other things. Based on the studies he cites (and one study in particular - that daily aspirin intake is associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality), I think I may up my...

    Food Triggered Irregular Heart Rhythm?

I started experiencing PVC's about 4 years ago. They became pretty bad, to the point where I could not sleep because they would constantly wake me up. Really started to become sick, and extremely fatigued. Went to several docs (most of whom said my heart was fine, don't worry about it...

Do you take low dose aspirin?

Same here. I have read all the studies also, and I plan to take one forever also. Not sure if this is in your list of studies or not, but low dose aspirin has also been shown to reduce the risk of stomach/colon/prostate cancers. Here is one study on...

    Florida living

There's no doubt it is warmer now - all you have to do to confirm that is to look at the temperature data trends over the last 20+ years. Climate change is real, folks, whether you believe it or not. It is not a political issue, it's science. And it is going to get worse. We will probably...

    Florida living

Well, I don't know about that. August and September in much of Florida can be pretty brutal also. Even into October, it can be uncomfortably warm and humid. I love the Florida climate from about November through early April, but I'd rather spend the other half of the year up north somewhere.

    Gardeners

I think I have removed about that many from our yard over the last 4 years also, via trapping. But, every Spring another pair shows up and has a bunch of young ones, so it goes on and on.

    Gardeners

Yes, but that doesn't necessarily deter woodchucks. They keep searching the perimeter, looking for a way to dig in. It is wooded not far behind my garden, so they have a lot of cover to hide in, before approaching the garden.

    Gardeners

I've had to trap 3 woodchucks so far this year..........all basically trying to dig their way into my garden. One did make it in, and did some damage before I was able to trap him. It's the same thing every year around here with the woodchucks. They den under an old, falling-down garage...

    the book "die with zero"

I haven't read the book, but I can appreciate the message. I have quite a few friends who retired around 60-ish, with a fair amount of assets, and planned to do a lot in retirement, for the next couple decades. But.........for several, declining health by the time they were 70-75 pretty much...

High Cholesterol despite correct weight, diet, exercise...What to do?

Yes, I agree with Audrey. Forget about cholesterol, it is a very poor indicator of heart health, despite what you may have heard. Look at your triglyceride/HDL ratio.......that is the important marker. If you are near 1.0, or below 1.0, you have no worries. If you are between 1.0 and 2.0...

    Gardeners

I feel your pain also. Lots of deer in our neighborhood also, and without a 6-ft. fence all around, my garden would be destroyed in short order by deer. But the fence doesn't help keep chipmunks out, and they are now munching down my broccoli plants, one by one. Grrrrr!! They munched on my...

Same thing here in the U.P. of Michigan. Lawn started turning brown the first week of June.........never saw that happen that early before. More smoky/hazy skies than I've ever seen at this time of year, also. Not good.

What type of sunscreen do you use?

Yes, wear a hat, and if you do use a sunscreen, use one with mostly zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a physical (mineral) sunscreen, not a chemical sunscreen that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Also, they are now finding that diet can be an important factor affecting your vulnerability to...

What type of sunscreen do you use?

I agree. I generally avoid using sunscreen, except for a little bit of zinc oxide, maybe. Many of them can get into your bloodstream and potentially cause problems. I also use light clothing and a larger hat when I'm going to be out in the sun for a while. A little bit of sun exposure on bare...

    High calcium score and angiogram

Completely agree with you, Eddie. There is so much misinformation out there about saturated fats and cholesterol, it's absurd. Like you, I eat red meat and eggs often, and my lipid numbers are just fine. The most important thing anyone can do is reduce (or eliminate, if possible)...
