8 Giant Losers This Year in S&P 500

List is by marketcap, and several members of my family have big holdings in some of these. Just another reason to put it in the S&P 500 and let it go. https://www.investors.com/etfs-and-funds/sectors/sp500-investors-lose-billions-on-these-giant-losers-this-year-2023/ Pfizer (PFE) -44.6%...

Opinions about the expiration of the estate tax limit in 2025

Thanks all for the info and advice. I have shown this thread to my friend and it has clarified some things for her. The surviving spouse does have an estate attorney. but she knew of my interest in these things and that I had a wealth of savvy people to ask about this, and I was happy to learn...

Opinions about the expiration of the estate tax limit in 2025

Marie - Yes, I'm told this was given as an option. Do you know what the downsides are to doing this? And from what I have read, the inflation index is from the earlier year, so yes, it's going to be significantly more than $5.5 million right now.

Opinions about the expiration of the estate tax limit in 2025

This article explains my friend's situation better. The lawyer is recommending a credit shelter trust as the spouse just passed away. https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/wealth-management-insights/TCJA-sunset-strategies

Opinions about the expiration of the estate tax limit in 2025

There's currently a tax exemption of about $12 million on estates. But that law is going to expire in 2025, and the exemption will revert back to what it was; $5.5 million plus inflation adjustment. More info here: https://www.schwab.com/learn/story/estate-tax-and-lifetime-gifting For those...

I think I may need therapy

You may be right: Therapy might help. So might a new life purpose. Maybe explore some worthy non-profits and put your skills and energy towards one you feel strongly about. I love the volunteer work I do and spread myself over a few different ones so that I don't feel too tied down to one...

    Default on Municipal Bonds

Thank you for all the comments and info about researching this mess of bonds. He has a bunch I need to wade through now. If any of you have parents who are managing their own investments - esp. those that don't subscribe to the idea of low-cost index funds - try to start conversations with...

    Default on Municipal Bonds

Thanks COcheesehead. The one that should have paid out and didn't is 05873WAP7 . The one I'm currently worried about is 476251AB9 And less so, because it is so far from maturity: 85236BAC6

    Default on Municipal Bonds

I have been dealing with my in-laws' finances lately. My FIL has had undiagnosed Alzheimer's for years, and he was prone to stock picking and loading up on large amounts of long-term muni bonds in Missouri. He was obsessed with income and 5% yields. One of them has recently outright failed...

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

Not a financial milestone, but it's been one year since we left LA for Northern California to FIRE. Neither of us miss work, even if hers had become entirely WFH. We also dont miss the heat, smoke and traffic, but do miss the huge variety of restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, galleries and...

Leaving jobs - Any ACA advice?

We filled it all out this weekend, and we did the same thing - explained all future income would be from investment dividends. Thanks again to everyone for their advice and input. I'll post again later to let you know if we experienced any roadblocks.

Leaving jobs - Any ACA advice?

I left my job a few months ago. My higher earning wife is leaving hers at the end of the year. FIRE away! We're planning on going on a California Covered silver plan - which looks great. Assuming neither of us draws a paycheck, our taxable income will drop from $125k+ to about $30k in taxable...

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

Hey Andre - You and I are almost exactly going at the same pace, starting 22 years ago. Congrats to you (and I guess to me). It's been a disconcertingly easy ride to be honest. Things will go wrong at some point, but it's nice to have that cushion when it inevitably does.

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

A kind of surprising milestone: I'm up over $300k in net worth this calendar year. I've never broken $300k in any year. It's all putting us closer to the day... Which as it gets closer makes me worried about entirely new things, rather than work.

    Cost Basis Gone Bad

Thank you all for your replies. As always, this board is a wealth of information and experience. I had read about the 6 month reassessment and knew it wouldn't be of any help, but didn't understand the ins and outs. Now I do. So, yes. Lessons learned by my mother that might be of help to...

    Cost Basis Gone Bad

I have an unusual situation, and I would like to get the opinion of this group's members. My father passed away recently, and he had a huge amount of his taxable assets in energy funds and stocks. His positions had taken massive hits from this over-exposure, and despite having held some of...

    2014 Investment Returns

We ended up at 13.5% for the year, which is close enough to the S&P500 benchmark for me. We're about 3% cash, 4% bonds, and the rest in equities. This will end up a bit lower b/c I don't know what the taxes will be on the cap gains and dividends in the taxable account. And though we're not...

Best investing strategy for financial independence

Hey mrjim - I saw your similar post on reddit. I'm not going to answer your question, but I will tell you to give heed to advice here much more than on reddit. This community of very successful FIREees proved very helpful in putting me on the path to FIRE quite a long time ago, and they have...

Your invested assets: taxable vs TIRA/401k vs Roths

    Your 2013 Investment Return

75 / 25 (the 25 is half real estate, a quarter (6%) cash, a quarter (6%) bonds). We were up 29%. When I include savings our net worth rose 40%. Whopping. A little scary. I feel bad for all of my friends who are scared to invest in stocks and how needlessly left behind they got this year - and...
